Flop in Hindi but a super hit in Kannada

Ashaant review :

An action bilingual made in Hindi and Kannada, Ashant starred Akshay Kumar and south superstar Dr. Vishnu Vardhan in lead roles with Puneet Issar and Jai Kalgutkar as villains. The plot revolved around a fake currency dye resulting in a cat and mouse chase between cops and gangsters.

Ashwini Bhave and Mamta Kulkarni played the heroines and a crucial sub plot comprised Vishnu Vardhan suspecting Ashwini having affair with Akshay. The hot and sexy Mamta Kulkarni sizzled in a two piece bikini in a song with Akshay. The duo rocked together again in producer Keshu Ramsay's super hit Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995).

Overall, Ashant was a routine actioner and the Hindi version bombed at the box office. Surprisingly the Kannada version titled Vishnu Vijaya became a super hit in Karnataka due to Vishnu Vardhan's massive fan following there. A classic example of how a superstar can turn an average film in to a money-spinner!!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Film Review
Dev_Sharma98719 May 2006
The only scene is liked in Ashant is the song -"Dil Ki Geary". Thats the sexiest song i have seen in my life. Akshay is a lady killer. The way he exploited Mamta in the song, throwing her about and playing with her body--it drove me crazy!!! Both (Akshay and Mamta) were thoroughly enjoying when doing the steamy scenes! The way Akshay ran to catch Mamta in the pool! IN short, Mamta was added in the film only for the song. She was tossed around by Akshay like a doll. She is so sexy. And she likes getting exploited thoroughly! Akshay is an expert when it comes to manhandling women! He sure knows how to handle them. And Mamta my god, that two piece bikini. She is mind blowing and sexy. She is too much

Akshay's underrated action film
superindrajit3 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Akshay Kumar was a good action hero but he was a flawed actor initially. His stunts were always good but his acting was raw and this rawness was a disadvantage initially. However, Akshay improved with each film. Akshay's first three films didn't click but Khiladi brought him to the top and got him noticed. 1993 was a lull period for Akshay because most of his films(with the exception of Waqt Hamara Hai) were flops. Ashaant was his first release and despite the wonderfully choreographed action and a decent story of a cop, the film failed at the box office.

Ashaant is the story of a frustrated cop who can't solve the crimes in Bangalore due to the pressure from his seniors and the corrupt officials. When Vijay actually does harm the villains by ruining some of their businesses, Vijay's close friend is killed. Vijay watches his friend die and he can't do a thing because his path is blocked by a gate. The rest of the film is how a completely stressed out and frustrated Vijay finds and murders Rana(the villain) with the help of a police inspector.

The concept of Ashaant is the same but this old age formula has been well handled in several parts. Producer turned Director Keshu Ramsay directs several scenes well. The game plan of Vijay and the cops is well handled, the romance is well handled for once(compared to most Bollywood films), and the action is simply superb. Music is mainly good because of the one hit song Ghadi Mera Dil which was well choreographed song as well. The death scene of Pankaj Dheer is well handled and the final action sequence is superb.

Akshay Kumar rocks as Vijay, the only problem is he hams it up badly in a few scenes. The scene in the hospital where he cries as his close friend dies is poorly acted by him. Those days, Akshay wasn't good at emoting and the overacting was slightly disappointing. Otherwise, Akshay rocks in every scene. When he talks like a smart cop, he is brilliant. The final action scene where he single handedly fights Rana is awesome, this is the kind of raw action I want in Bollywood films nowadays. The heroines Ashwini Bhave and Mamta Kulkarni are decent but Mamta Kulkarni has a very short role. Kanada superstar Vishnuvardhan is good but his role lacks the meat if you compare him with Akshay Kumar. Pankaj Dheer is good and he doesn't ham it up like he did in Mr. Bond(1992) as Daaga. Punnet Issar as Rana is good, his physique is simply superb and he looks like a cruel villain. The rest provide decent support.

On the whole, Ashaant(1993) is one of those Akshay Kumar films that went unnoticed despite being decent. The film should've been a hit but it lost out to other films which were hyped.

Good acting by Akshay Kumar
mohsinleghari300022 December 2002
Ashaant is a story of Police and underworld. Akshay Kumar and Vishnu Vardhan acted very well. The story is not very complicated. The name of the movie describes the condition of Akshay Kumar when he becomes outraged at the killing of his best friend by underworld. There was not much scope for the heroin in the movie. The best song of the movie is "dil ki ghadi arey ghadi ghadi na jaane kare kyon tik tik tik' sung by Kumar Sanu. In this song Mamta Kulkarni looks like a doll in Akshay Kumar's hands. She looks very pretty. A two piece swim suit worn by Mamta Kulkarni can also be seen in the song. The movie can be watched if you have two and a half hours to spare on an Indian movie.
