MusicSince the 80s, Chithra has been omnipresent in the world of Malayalam film music. Her entry was perfectly timed — she came at a time when the old guard of singers had mostly left the film music scene and a new generation of musicians had emerged.Ks Chithra / Facebook‘Angopangam’, the semi classical song in the hugely popular film Devasuram (1993) is a favourite among the fans of Ks Chithra, often called the Vanampadi (nightingale) of Malayalam music. But the song has a backstory that many don't know — music director Mg Radhakrishnan had initially hired another singer for it. But when it turned out that the singer didn't possess the skills to pull off such a complex composition, Chithra was brought in, and the song was recorded in a single take. “She was flawless, a singing monster if one may call her that,” recalled singer Mg Sreekumar, who is also the late composer's brother.

OpinionThe Shobana-Mohanlal starrer 'Abhayam Thedi' can be called a companion piece to director IV Sasi’s 'Anubandham' and 'Aalkkoottathil Thaniye', in how it depicts family struggles and individual crisis.Mohanlal and Shobana in Abhayam ThediWriter Mt Vasudevan Nair’s worldbuilding in director IV Sasi’s 1986 Malayalam film Abhayam Thedi (seeking refuge) is quite intricate. The stock, dysfunctional, Nair tharavadu (ancestral mansion) has the ‘aesthetics’ of a dominant caste Hindu household — a massive double-storeyed house that still carries vestiges of its occupants' bruised past and fraught present, enclosed by front yards, back yards, ancient trees, ponds, and acres of seclusion. It is to this space that Miranda (Shobana), the granddaughter of the patriarch’s deceased prodigal son returns, hoping to find refuge and solace. Abhayam Thedi can be called a companion piece to Sasi’s Anubandham (1985) and Aalkkoottathil Thaniye (1984) — the milieu, the familial conflicts, and individuals going through an existential crisis.

DeathFrom being slapstick silly and lighthearted to sarcastic, shameless and quirky, there was no type of humour he couldn't pull off.Malayalam actor and politician Innocent passed away at the age of 75 at 10.30 pm on Sunday, March 26, due to Covid-19 related respiratory issues leading to organ failure and cardiac arrest. He might have had top-billing in only a handful of films but his sense of comic timing and razor sharp wit delivered in rib-tickling Thrissurian slang made him a scene-stealer in every film he was part of. He also wore many hats, first as an entrepreneur and later as a politician who fought an electoral battle and was elected as Member of Parliament representing Chalakudy constituency. He also served as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists for many years. Innocent, also a cancer survivor, revelled in narrating funny anecdotes and wrote light-hearted books about his illness. He...

InterviewRevathi is right now busy with editing work of her new film, 'Salaam Venky'.CrisRevathiBarely 17, Asha walked into the house of a happy family next door and into Malayalam cinema more than 38 years ago. Bharathan, a legend among the 80s filmmakers, cast her to be the possessive young woman acting vengefully against an older woman in Kaattathe Kilikkoodu. Asha had become Revathi when she began acting, and it is as Revathi that Malaylis knew her and admired her through all these decades. Two days ago, when Revathi was announced the winner of the state award for best female actor, it became a moment of quiet pride for cinema lovers. It’s her first from the state, though she has won national awards for her role in Thevar Magan and as a director for Mitr, My Friend and Red Building Where The Sun Sets. She’s been active in Tamil and Hindi,...

ReviewThe script is chock-a-block with references to old Mohanlal films. Such an indulgence can be forgiven if it was limited to a few scenes, but it becomes jarring after a point. Sowmya RajendranIt’s no secret that Mohanlal has been trying to expand his market beyond Kerala for the past few years. The star, still the darling of the masses in Kerala, appears to be miffed by the reception to his recent films, particularly Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. In an interview with Manorama channel that went viral, Mohanlal can be seen praising the Telugu audience for how they reportedly “support” Telugu films and respect their stars. But is that the case here, he asks and laughs dismissively. Perhaps it is this that led director B Unnikrishnan to abandon the Oxford English dictionary used in his last Mohanlal film Villain and turn to Telugu instead. Written by Udaykrishna, Aaraattu employs not only...
