I still remember watching this film on the very first day of its release. My aunt and me booked tickets at the Shenoys theatre in Kochi for the night show. Vishnulokam was a much awaited Mohanlal film. He plays the leading man of a travelling show and pulls off cunning stunts like moving a car with a rope tied to his hair and other tricks on a cycle.
Urvashi was terrific as one of the rambunctious ladies in the traveling show. She upstaged Mohanlal in the famous Kasturi song. Shanthi Krishna plays a weepy upper caste Hindu woman who is being coveted by a cruel thampuran played by the brilliant Murali. Shanthi was such a beautiful lady but was reduced to acting in mediocre films like this one.
I recently caught the film on TV. It did have a few entertaining bits involving Jagadish. But what promised to be a scintillating entertainer ends up as a weepy drama about the decline of an upper caste Hindu family. The film is mostly a turkey - a big disappointment, though I think it made quite a bit of money at the box office.
