Strangely Poetic
ricardojorgeramalho7 March 2023
This is, apparently, a strange film. It tells a social drama, tragic in many ways, but in a comedic tone.

A young crook aspiring to be a mobster meets a young peasant woman who has just arrived in town. Both get lost in the big city of Osaka and are crushed by crime and vice. Despite this, a reciprocal and disinterested love borns, between them, an unlikely and incapable couple.

A tragicomedy that looks casually and cynically at the misery of the big cities and of the human condition, in general.

Despite the manifest incompatibility of tone and content, the film develops in the viewer a strange and poetic sympathy for the characters, largely because of their apparent innocence. Two fragile flowers, lost in the huge urban swamp.
