Bruce Pittman's first of two Sinclair Ross short films(he did Oscar nominated "The Painted Door" the following year), this new version of "Cornet at Night" is more of a crowd pleaser than the first but less true to the spirit of the short story. As much as I enjoy R.H. Thomson's work, he is miscast here as Philip Coleman, the sickly city slicker. The one thing this version has that is sadly missing from the first is the horse and buggy mishap which is an important plot element. Overall, a nice companion piece to "The Painted Door". I'm not alone in wishing there were more Sinclair Ross stories made into movies. The only other one I know about is Ann Wheeler's "One's A Heifer" which is the most mysterious of the three. Come on, National Film Board. We're all waiting for Pittman or Wheeler to do justice to "The Lamp At Noon" and other Sinclair Ross classics.
