Amid all the shorts I enjoyed at Hill Country Film Festival, I also saw some longer movies. One documentary is technically a short but may be longer at some point, and one feature-length doc will likely be somewhat shorter by the time you see it. Both Bluefin on the Line (pictured at top) and Lord Montagu are set in very different environments but ultimately, are about families working hard to preserve their legacies.
Bluefin on the Line is the latest documentary from sometimes-Austin* filmmaker Bradley Beesley, whose previous films include The Fearless Freaks, Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo and most appropriately for this subject, Okie Noodling. Elizabeth interviewed the Oklahoma native a couple of years ago for his segment in Slacker 2011. This 37-minute film takes a look at the history and culture of the Bimini Islands over the past century, particularly big-game fishing and how it has affected the people who live there.

If you’ve spent the day parsing Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan’s resume — perhaps glossing over his young fixation on psychopathic killer fan Ayn Rand — you may have stumbled when you encountered the name of one of his hobbies: catfish noodling. If you’re not up on the sport of wrestling these fish with your bare hands, check out Okie Noodling, a doc by Filmmaker 25 New Face Bradley Beesley. It streams free via Snag Films below.

Here's the latest in Austin and Texas film news.
Austin-based director Richard Linklater's latest film Bernie opened on Friday in limited runs in New York, L.A. and Austin (at Violet Crown). The Austin Chronicle reported the result: the best opening weekend ever for a Linklater feature. Needless to say, Bernie killed at the box office with more than $30,000 estimated per screen ($90,400 total).IndieWIRE reported that Dallas filmmaker David Lowery is set to write and direct the Rooney Mara (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Ben Foster, Casey Affleck flick Ain't Them Bodies Saints. Lowery's short film Pioneer (Jette's article) won the Grand Jury Award at SXSW 2011 and his feature debut, St. Nick (Jette's article), was a 2007 Texas Filmmakers Production Fund recipient. Ain't Them Bodies Saints, a project of the 2011 Creative Producing Labs and Creative Producing Summit at Sundance, tells the story of a 1970s outlaw who escapes from prison...

In celebration of Slacker's 20th anniversary, local filmmakers are re-creating scenes from the Richard Linklater movie for Slacker 2011, a fundraising project benefitting the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund. The trailer is now available. As we await the August 31 premiere, we're chatting with some of the filmmakers participating in one or more of the short films that will comprise the project.
Today's interview is with Bradley Beesley, an Oklahoman documentarian (Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, The Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling) who now calls Austin home. He is a past winner of the Tfpf grant; here's Jette's review of Summercamp! (for Cinematical, Rip).
Slackerwood: Which scene from the film did you re-shoot?
Bradley Beesley: My scene was "Oblique Strategies".

This interview originally ran as part of our coverage of the 2009 SXSW Film Festival.
Outside of his ongoing collaboration with The Flaming Lips, Bradley Beesley last tackled the great outdoors with the bare-hand fishing doc "Okie Noodling," which premiered at SXSW back in 2001. Eight years later, Beesley is once again casting his lens on a sport of a bygone era, though this time he's stepping indoors -- as in the big house -- for "Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo," a look at the Oklahoma penal system's annual bull riding and horse wrangling competition. Although the prisons take the rodeo quite seriously, complete with in-house saddle shops and mechanical bulls to practice on, no one seems to take it more seriously than the prisoners themselves, who look forward to every August when their minds shift from how much time they have left in their sentence to how long they can stay on a bucking bronco.

I've been hearing all week about an upcoming Flaming Lips concert here in Austin, and while I'm unlikely to go (it's up against the opening night of SXSW Film), I do have an urge to see the Flaming Lips perform again. Fortunately, I can do this right from the comfort of my computer. SlashControl has the 2005 documentary about the band, The Fearless Freaks, available to stream online for free.
The Fearless Freaks is directed by Bradley Beesley (Okie Noodling, Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo), who grew up in the same hometown as the Flaming Lips -- Oklahoma City. Beesley has also directed some Flaming Lips videos and helped out with Wayne Coyne's feature film Christmas on Mars, and is able to provide an intimate portrait of the band, not just a standard music biopic.
Although The Fearless Freaks shows the progression of the band and contains scenes of them on tour,...

When I was a kid, I never got to go to summer camp. Thus, my view of the experience was permanently twisted by Ivan Reitman's Meatballs and Sean Cunningham's Friday the 13th: free-spirited hijinks or death and dismemberment. For a different, possibly more realistic view, you might want to check out Summercamp!, a documentary that's available for free streaming over at SnagFilms. As pictured, sometimes all you want to do at camp is kick back and put up your feet.
Directed by Bradley Beesley (Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, Okie Noodling) and Sarah Price (The Yes Men), the doc follows "the day-to-day drama of 90 kids let loose in the woods at Swift Nature Camp in northern Wisconsin." Our own Jette Kernion said it's "the kind of movie where you just relax your brain and let the images and sounds wash over you ... A lot of the film's appeal...
