Stirring and loving drama about a motley group of characters living by the Mediterranean sea
ma-cortes1 December 2018
A drunk, drifter, and occassionally druggie woman called Chelo, Lolita Flores, arrives in a Mediterranean location, Cullera, Valencia, to show her spectacle as a popular but faded singer. This proud female lived better times in her long career as a singer ,however, nowadays she plays second-class shows at the squares of little towns or villages . After ten years Charo meets an old lover, the love of her life, called Toni : Jorge Perugorria , a tiny delinquent working on the beach, who is hidden at this small town from prior crimes. He is in love with a beautiful young girl, Elena Anaya , whose brother is a local cop who investigates the dark past of the little crook Toni . Things go wrong when there appears another ex-girlfriend, Mar Regueras, with her child.

Intense drama with emotion, triangular love stories and a lot of songs well played by Lolita Flores. It is an exciting film dealing with bizarre and grotesque characters , being competently acted and concerning the moving narration about the twisted relationships among a group of misfit roles full of suspects, envy, jealousy and vengeance. The film relies heavily on the two main characters played by Lolita Flores as a femme fatale and Jorge Perugorria as a Macho man , both of them give decent acting, but they have not the indispensable and essential chemical. This is an acceptable witty drama , adding a bit of comedy describing the outlandish characters . The film is full of nice moments , tenderness , with an attractive relation among between middle-class people and lower-class individuals . Being well developed an enjoyable relationship between a deranged but proud man and a spontaneous and outspoken woman of lower-class nicely played by Lolita Flores . The picture tends to become itself into a dramatic entertainment ; being narrated in great sense of ductility and fairness . It's a passable picture , dealing with unusual townsfolks , being compellingly acted and concerning the narration about the relationship between a misfit bunch of agreeable roles . The film attempts to spread some optimism about about events of life , with its amusing sides but also including familiar discussions and pieces of nonsense . Not trying to be unrealistic and make everything as in a domestic tale but giving way to absurdity . Plenty of emotional and attractive feeling in which solidarity triumphs and despite the poorness and penury . In addition , the film gives us a nice panorama about lower-class people , their pity , goodness , sacrifice , work , shortage , betrayed loves and various situations happen in their troublesome existences . And the thrilling ending at a roulotte has some embarrassing and disconcertating scenes.

Lively and enjoyable score by Lucio Godoy, a good composer who has composed notable soundtracks in a lot of successful movies such as : All about mi mother, Blackthorn, Amador, Cuento Chino, Mataharis, Melissa P, among others . Adding charming and popular songs performed by Lolita Flores such as : La Bambola written by Ruggero Cini, Franco Migliacci, Bruno Zambrini and Mediterraneo composed by Joan Manuel Serrat, Caramba, carambita performed by Lolita Flores , La mentira performed by Lolita Flores and Será el amor also performed by Lolita Flores . It also displays a colorful and brilliant cinematograhy by Alfonso Sanz. Being shot on location in Cullera, Valencia, Sagunto and La Manga del Mar Menor, Murcia. The motion picture was professionally directed by Miguel Albadalejo, though it has some flaws and gaps . Albadalejo is a fine craftsman expert on comedy and drama, as he proved in Ten days without love or Cielo abierto, Bear Club, Volando voy, Ataque verbal, The first life of my life and this Rencor. Rating :6/10. Acceptable and passable. This is a good feeling movie with drama, soap opera and twisted relations. The flick will appeal to Spanish movies aficionados. Worthwhile watching. A great performance from Lolita Flores
newland8019 May 2004
As irregular as the film might be, it is sure that anyone who watches "Rencor" will be highly impressed by Lolita Flores' performance in it. Chelo Zamora is a extremely charismatic character, and Lolita takes advantage from the excellent lines written by Miguel Albaladejo. It is a shame, however, that the storyline is often iffy and that Lolita's leading man, Jorge Perugorría, is a little miscast.

I hope Lolita keeps getting meaty film roles in the future, although she seems more TV-oriented nowadays. Writer-Director Miguel Albaladejo is one to follow, since he manages to present a different kind of comedy in Spanish cinema, as in "El cielo abierto" or "Cachorro".

Overall rating: 7.
