"When someone tells you not to be that ambitious, at least me, my first gut reaction is 'I can prove them wrong.' " That's John Krokidas talking, the writer and director of Kill Your Darlings, but it just as easily could have come from Allen Ginsberg, the central figure of Krokidas's feature directing debut, played as a curious but ambitious college student by Daniel Radcliffe. Krokidas wrote the script with his college roommate Austin Bunn and spent nine grueling years trying to get the film made, frequently reminded that a period piece from a first-time director was no easy sell. After bringing his Nyu thesis short film Slo-Mo to the Sundance Film Festival in 2002, "I vowed to come back two years later with my first feature," Krokidas says. That film was Kill Your Darlings. It premiered at Sundance 11 years later. I met John Krokidas for coffee on the Upper West...

With his last directing credit being short film Slo-Mo (Sundance ’02), it’s been more than a decade before John Krokidas got to make his feature debut – and on paper, we can say Kill Your Darlings was worth the wait. Produced by a Sundance stalwart in Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and photographed by Reed Morano (Sundance preemed Frozen River, Little Birds, For Ellen, Shut Up and Play the Hits), the Sundance connection can be found in several members in a star wattage that reads as such: Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jack Huston, Elizabeth Olsen, David Cross, Kyra Sedgwick and Dane DeHaan. Filming began in March so this is way past the post-production phase and should be a a possible top acquisitions title for the fest, and perfect companion/comparison piece to On the Road and Howl.

A few weeks back, news broke that a film called Kill Your Darlings was heading into production and would feature actor Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Sunshine) as Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac and Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland, The Squid and the Whale) as legendary gay poet Allen Ginsberg. Naturally, the news had film buffs and gay bloggers abuzz.
Top row (l to r): Chris Evans, Ben Whishaw, and Jesse Eisenberg
Bottom row (l to r): Jack Kerouac, Lucien Carr and Allen Ginsberg
Coming on the heels of Milk, film fans are clearly primed for more tales of gay culture’s pioneers and artists. This one’s also been co-written and is set to be directed by a rising gay filmmaker, John Krokidas, and produced by the legendary indie-film mogul Christine Vachon (Poison, Boys Don’t Cry, Hedwig, Far From Heaven), so it’s got a nice gay pedigree already.

- We got a morsel of him in another Killer Films’ project in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There (David Cross played a bearded version of the written word maverick), and the upcoming release of Howl will showcase James Franco in the big shoes of the great Allen Ginsberg. Is the beatnik culture making a big screen comeback? Apparently so. Variety reports that Christine Vachon has nabbed what appears to be not only a biopic but also works as a thriller spec script by John Krokidas and Austin Bunn. Krokidas who is tapped to make his directorial debut with Slo-Mo (a Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe's Single Cell Pictures project - the production company that participated on Velvet Goldmine and Being John Malkovich). Not to be confused with the terrible, same-titled Swedish U.S-set road movie from a couple of years back, Kill Your Darlings will showcase the founding members of Allen Ginsberg,
