Current affairs in-depth
shmej1 November 2002
In 1994 TVNZ introduced a programme taking a closer look into the stories than any other show prior. Hosted by Fair Go reporter Carol Hirshfeld, it introduced some of New Zealand's leading investigative journalists.

In 2002, Assignment continues its strong and comprehensive coverage of the news stories that matter most to New Zealanders. Now hosted by One News reporter Richard Long, the shows features an award-winning team of journalists that include John Hudson, Rod Vaughan, Kerryanne Evans, Jackie Maher, and Qantas Reporter of the Year Mark Crysell. This year it recieved six of the eight current affairs awards at the Qantas Media Awards.

Its coverage of such events as the collapse of Ansett Australia and the September 11 tragedies, together with its willingness to travel the world just for a single report, are only a few of many reasons why it will be missed by many when it merges with current affairs show Sunday at the end of this year.

Assignment viewers will, however, still be treated with international reports from the BBC next year in Foreign Assignment.
