- The murder of a young Asian woman brings Dalziel and Pascoe into the inner city right in the middle of a racially sensitive situation. With drugs, unemployment and the closure of the only teenage community project added to the mix this rapidly becomes an explosive situation for Dalziel to handle. As the rioting gets worse and the body count increases Dalziel comes under pressure to accept the racial motivation for the murders but he refuses and continues to dig deeper into the background of the local inhabitants. When a witness comes forward with some vital information, Dalziel sets a trap to catch the culprit. During interrogation the real motives for the murders are revealed together with the complex web of lies and deceit that preceeded them.—Mark Smith <msmith@osi.co.uk>
- Although called at night to a riot in ethnically diverse, backward, unruly city neighborhood Brierstown to take charge of he investigation for the rifle-murder of Simran Ghataura, the real target possibly being her father local tycoon and politician Bobby, Dalziel gets an icy welcome from local detective superintendent Julie Devon, who cares only for the political and PR risks and is appointed 'liaison', i.e. mother in law. More helpful, knowledgeable and zealous is beat cop PC Surgit Singh, a Sikh. Peter is excited by the announced visit of his daughter Rosie and moves from 'outdated' Andy's to his still secret lover pathologist Dr. Sally Shetra, but she's outed and his ex manages to cancel the reunion, so he returns to Andy and properly joins the case team. Bobby's opponent in the debate just before the shooting was white tycoon and councilor Tommy Collingwood, accused of manipulating the promising project for wayward locals by 'racist infiltration'. Bobby's son and right hand Ravi was an overprotective brother, Tommy's sons are drug addicted or utterly estranged. Shortly after volunteering to report seeing the probable murder weapon in the river, local Fiz is murdered too. Despite the ongoing riots, Dalziel makes controversial arrests, leading to a nightmare trap.—KGF Vissers
- Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascal find themselves in Brierstown, a racially diverse inner city neighborhood, when Simran Ghatura is shot by a sniper's bullet. The young woman was a community activist who was leaving a town hall meeting over a development to provide assistance to troubled youth. Her father Bobby and Councilor Tommy Collingwood have been in a heated battle over the development and tensions in the community are rising so it's not apparent that Simran was the intended victim. Assisted by constable Surgit Singh, one of the few Sikhs on the local force, Dalziel and his team try to piece together what happened and who may have had a motive. In a constant battle with local Supt. Julie Devon, who doesn't appreciate his gruff style, Andy finds that the person responsible may one of their own. Peter meanwhile has a falling out with Andy when he doesn't' tell him daughter Rosie is coming for a visit. He also doesn't tell him about having a relationship with the local medical examiner, Sally Shetra.—garykmcd
