Powerful Drama...Worth Watching
karenizcool26 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this because I am a big Anita Mui fan, and at first I didn't want to watch it because of the reviews. I was definitely prepared for the "Genre" switch halfway through the film but I do believe it's definitely a drama. I loved the beginning, but not so much the ending.

The background shots are beautiful and Anita Mui I thought acted beautifully. It definitely painted a negative image of tourism...but I would compare this film more with Taken.

If you are an Anita Mui fan, she speaks a lot of English here which is great & most of the scenes are of her.

I bought this movie for $4.00 and I don't think i'm going to be watching it over and over again, but I think it's a good movie to add to my collection for the price.

I would recommend this if you want to watch something different in a melancholy tone. The tone is very gloomy / foggy throughout the film. And of course if you are an Anita Mui fan or Risa Junna fan because that means you'd like anything they're in which is my case. :)

Voyeur's paradise, critic's nightmare
mwa5 July 2002
This film has a beautiful package--gorgeous settings, beautiful stars, astonishing photography--but surprisingly void of content. Suspending disbelief at the plot's central conceit is nigh on impossible, for starters... then, the contrivance of the kidnapping--which plays into many foreigners's worst prejudices and fears about the Arab world, and is relatively unfounded in fact--is laughable. Not as laughable as R. Junna's performance, though: basically, she utters dry English lines without conviction, or screams/cries/wails hysterically. Anita Mui's embers smolder and flame, but she seems out of place in a film of (poorly directed?) second-rate actors. I was bored silly through most of the Morocco sequences: the characterization was stereotypical (who is Mike, and why should we care about him? why on earth would any woman be interested in the callow Chinese doctor, is unimaginable, etc.) and the plot painfully predictable. A voyeur's paradise, maybe, but a critic's nightmare.

Miss Anita Mui!

Warning: Spoilers
Miss Anita Mui! It is actually based on real events, or is it less single travel! Obscure and gloomy without hope and redemption, it is indeed a heart-wrenching holiday!

A pure Dud
ebiros227 February 2013
Here's an example of a movie that doesn't work even if you hire the best actors to do their job.

The movie seems to have Japanese production, and no doubt it has Japanese movie like story, to it. They might of thought that hiring the best of Hong Kong acting talent, and combine it with Japanese-ish visuals would instantly create a success. Well, they were wrong.

I'm an Asian movie fan, and I'm a fan of both Hong Kong, and Japanese movies, but I've rarely seen an incipit movie as this one. It was infuriating to watch the talents wasted.

The movie does no justice to Anita Mui, and Simon Yam, and it was a mismatch like hiring French actors to do an American movie.

It might have worked if the actors were all Japanese, and then it would have been like some of the Kadokawa movies.

Riveting (at least after the 1st half)
williamsson30 September 2002
Having read the last reviewer's comments ("Beautiful movie. . . "), I felt a need to write this review. 'Beautiful' shouldn't be the word to describe this movie, although I would concede that the movie was RIVETING, especially the 2nd half. The story starts out portraying a developing relationship between 2 women despairing over the men in their lives. As the plot unfolds, the viewer realizes the women are involved with the SAME man. From thence it would seem like the plot would be straightforward but then the movie takes a sharp turn which I can only describe as DEPRAVED, like a cross between "Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven" . Even now, a week later, I can't stop thinking about it. This movie would best be described as well acted but, depressing, dark, depraved and thoroughly disturbing. And, just when you think everything is going to work out in the end, there's a final twist and NO HAPPY ENDING. Don't see this movie if you're the type of person afraid to walk down a lonely, dark street by yourself. And, if you do see it, be prepared to feel DISTURBED at the end.

Infuriating Script
Imhotep7731 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
The movie suffers from the same ailment that befalls most HK made movies in that it has the most ridiculous and contrived plot line. Bad script doesn't belong exclusively to HK movies, of course; Hollywood spews out many as well, but percentage wise, HK takes the cake. What are the odds that the wife and mistress would join the same tour in Europe on the same day! Okay, I can roll with that since the whole premise of the story rests of their meeting and becoming friends. Then near the end, when Anita walks all the way back to town--with her luggage, no less--when it is shown that the train has taken her far, far away, I just rolled my eyes. But at the end, when the women, instead of running to the hotel lobby for help (it is a classy hotel but it seems totally deserted, which is ridiculous), and not calling the police beforehand, they run out to the dessert, which is at the back of the hotel, and there is not a single person around, and without yelling for help!!! That was just plain moronic script writing. The whole situation is so manufactured to illicit people's emotion that I realize why it belongs in a bargain bin that I found it.

A Tale Of Two Movies
crossbow010611 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I've never seen a film of Anita Mui's when she was still with us, so there is an air of poignancy, especially in a film like this. The story of two ladies, Michele (Anita Mui) and Miki (Junna Risa), meet on a tour bus in France and bond. This part of the film is great, they seem to have an affection for each other (not sexually). There is an interesting twist to this tale, in that Michele's husband has a mistress, who turns out to be, of course, Miki. How they play off this revelation is good, especially the betrayal in Michele's eyes. Both Ms. Mui and Ms. Risa are very pretty, and the cinematography of this film lends to the atmosphere, painting it gray, yellow etc. In the middle of the film, Miki gets abducted and Michele goes to the police. She is hell bent on finding her, and enlists help from a cab driver (this is in Morocco). I wondered how Moroccans felt watching this, their country is not looked at in a favorable light. I didn't expect the depth of this drama. I wanted to know the end way before it happened. Not a great film, it still held my interest throughout. RIP Ms. Anita Mui. You are really someone special.

A Beautiful Movie!!!
Roninja3 May 2002
This movie has a real interesting plot. Anita Mui's character's marriage is failing and by chance she bumps into her husband's mistress (who's pregnant with his child) on a trip in France. When they go to Morocco, however, the mistress mysteriously disappears. Most of the film was shot in English and on location in both France and Morocco. I just wish more people got a chance to see it. It's just a beautiful movie!!!
