Excellent story telling
indogenius17 February 2008
If you are a devotee of Sai Baba, the movie is gripping. Even if you are not a devotee and just watching the movie, the storyline is gripping, and music is catchy. Acting is good and there are no dull moments in the movie. Considering that the movie was made in 1970s, the special effects are alright. The story remains true to the official Satcharit of Sai Baba, tough the producer has taken some creative liberty here and there. The songs are beautiful, and if you are a India-born baby-boomer like me, you would remember the songs from good old Vividh-Bharti and Ceylon Radio-stations days of sixties and seventies. All in All, it is an excellent movie.

A genuine depiction of Baba's life and legacy
rtoac14 December 2023
This is a Hindi language film on the life of the legendary mystic and guru Sai Baba from Shirdi.

So powerful was the aura of this sage that it reverberates even today. With devotees and followers across Maharashtra where Shirdi is situated, to neighbouring states even today a 100 years later. Remarkably, he has a following across both Sanatana Dharma followers (Hindus) and Muslims alike. He dressed like a Muslim fakir and preached from both their teachings.

The film tries to set a context on how Sai Baba's appeal and miracles are beyond the explanation of both science and accident.

The film was the first honest attempt to give a view into Sai Baba's life and legacy. Led by the veteran Sudhir Dalvi playing the title character in his most memorable role with an inimitable performance. No one has been able to come close.. Leading Bollywood actors also gave commendable performances as the supporting cast, most of them cameos.

The music is also memorable. The film is a nice watch for children too and has never failed to leave the audience in tears.

Great watch

It is a pleasing experience seeing it. One of the earlier movie adaptations on Shirdi Sai Baba. Foremost accolade would be on the music. The songs are soothing and popular even now. It was probably the beginning of a glorious Bhajan Career of Anup Jalota. Rafi ji delighted in his renditions too.

The characters and depictions look authentic. Tatya Patil, Shama and Mhalaapati among others in the movie look close to what the paintings of real persons depict them. The costumes look realistic too. There are some cinematic liberties taken but the presence of Sai Baba 100-150 years back in this world was so enigmatic that no one can claim to have a true story. Sudhir Dalvi became associated so much with the role that he played the role of Sai Baba on movies and TV later too.
