The Broadway production of "Clarence Darrow" by David W. Rintels opened at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York on March 26, 1974 and ran for 29 performances.
Henry Fonda was nominated for the 1975 Tony Award (New York City) for Actor in a Drama for "Clarence Darrow".
Darrow/Fonda mentions his parents were Democrats in a region of "rock ribbed Republicans" and helped slaves escape to the North. This does not make sense. The Democratic Party before the Civil War was not against slavery while the Republican Party was against slavery. It must be remembered that this play dates from 1974 during the Watergate scandal when Nixon and the Republican Party were anathema to Broadway audiences.
