Rousing animated fun

On the most part the Walter J.Hucker-produced animations are great to watch. A few disappointed(Moby Dick for example) but to take on literary classics at less than 50 minutes and animated is really a laudable effort. The Legend of Robin Hood I found to be great fun. The character designs are a little too rough-looking and sketchy, but the backgrounds and colours are fluid and colourful, simple but never over-simplistic. The music has that gallant adventure-like sound to it and suits the tone of the story wonderfully, it's not Erich Korngold(who scored The Adventures of Robin Hood, the definitive Robin Hood film) level but it would be unfair to expect it. The dialogue is witty, adding to the impact of the story and title character, the action is rousing and looks good and never disorganised and the story is faithful in spirit(adding as much as they can and always engaging. Robin is a titular character of great heroism, his Merrie Men are fun with nicely defined personalities, Maid Marion is a beautiful love interest and the Sheriff of Nottingham as an adversary is more than convincing. All in all, this animated adaptation is just as fun as the legend. 8/10 Bethany Cox
