Monday was a very busy day for Oscar nominees. Aside from the main event that I covered in detail yesterday, the Oscar Nominees luncheon, a couple of trade sites poached the Academy’s large turnout for nighttime parties offering yet more photo ops. The bigger names usually walk down the carpets at those things, head through the door, grab a piece of pizza and head to the exit. Anything to keep your name out front and your face in front of voters at a crucial time. And since there are lots of nominees who come into town just for the luncheon, their handlers make them available for one last late-night talk show appearance before voting starts.

Little White Lies
Director: Guillaume Canet
Written by Guillaume Canet
France, 2010
Guillaume Canet’s Little White Lies starts with a big bang and ends with a whole lot of whimpering. The third feature from the director of Tell No One promised to be undemanding fun, accompanied by that veneer of French sophistication you don’t find in Jennifer Aniston movies. A bunch of affluent, self-obsessed Parisians on a beach holiday also sounds like material that’s just ripe for a Hollywood makeover. But it turns out that Canet’s film is a remake – a homage if you prefer – to that Baby Boomer classic, The Big Chill. The bad news is that Canet’s film runs to an extravagant 154 minutes. As the lachrymose finale dragged on and on, I’m afraid I almost lost the will to live.
The bravura opening gives no hint of the cinematic car crash that follows.

Unlike the 19 pro pundits who weighed in with Golden Globe predictions, 7 of our forum moderators think that the main competition for "Up in the Air" as best drama picture is "Inglourious Basterds" rather than "Avatar." While the pros were almost evenly divided as to the winner of the drama movie actress -- with a slim majority going with Carey Mulligan ("An Education") -- our moderators are firmly on the side of Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side"). Neither the pros nor the moderators can agree on who will win drama movie actor or comedy/musical movie. As with all but one of the pros, our moderators agree that Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia") will win comedy/musical movie actress. However, almost all of our moderators are backing Robert Downey Jr. ("Sherlock Holmes") to win comedy/musical movie actor while the pros spread their predictions around all five contenders.

After piping in with their Oscars predix for best pix on Tuesday, our forums' moderators now stick out their thin, tender, trembling necks to forecast the best-actress race. Chris "Boomer" Beachum, Matthew "Boidiva02" Cormier, Darrin "DoubleD" Dortch, Robert "Rob L" Licuria, Andrew "andrew" Pickett and Paul Sheehan. Only two actresses get the bets of all of these pundits: Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Helen Mirren ("The Last Station"). Yeah, I'm sure they're right about that duo. Those not putting their derby dollars down on Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire") and Saoirse Ronan ("The Lovely Bones") will regret it later. Personally, my fifth pick is Marion Cotillard ("Nine"). Check out our...

9:06 p.m. — As with all of the past seven Oscars held at the Kodak Theater, the Governors Ball takes place in the adjoining Grand Ballroom which is 25,090 square feet. The menu for the Governors Ball was created by Wolfgang Puck for the fifteenth consecutive year. He promises the return of old favorites like tuna tartare in sesame miso cones and Maine lobster as well as, of course, caviar. And pastry chef Sherry Yard will once more be creating her gold-dusted chocolate Oscars as consolation prizes for those who didn’t get one of the real ones. Music will be spun by Kcrw radio host Jason Bentley who will alternate with The Impulse...
