Doctor Who show-runner Steven Moffat reveals his plan for more online mini-episodes…
Extra online content is on Steven Moffat’s Doctor Who agenda, we’ve learned.
"I think we now have to accept that online stuff isn't a spin-off anymore," he told SFX. "We used to treat it as a spin-off that maybe some people would watch.”
Admitting that he often used online content as a way to bolster budgets, Moffat explained that "they'd give me some money to do an online thing and I'd say, 'Right, what crew do we already have, what actors do we already have, what set do we already have?' So we'd spend no money on it at all, whack it out in a day, pump the money into the episode and off you go."
The turning point wasn’t The Night Of The Doctor as you might expect though, but comedy series 7 tie-in Pond Life.

Steven Moffat has promised Doctor Who fans more online episodes.
Following the success of iPlayer special 'The Night of the Doctor', the sci-fi showrunner told SFX that he would like to make similar episodes for the new series.
"I think we now have to accept that online stuff isn't a spin-off anymore," he said. "We used to treat it as a spin-off that maybe some people would watch.

There were certainly enough twists and turns in the latest series of Doctor Who to warrant a re-viewing, and not that The Complete Seventh Series is out on DVD and Blu-Ray, you’ve got your chance. The Fall of the Ponds, The Impossible Girl, and one hell of a cliffhanger, all packed up in one nice little package.
The box features all 13 episodes of the series, including all the prequels, as well as the five-part mini-series “Pond Life” There’s also three new mini-sodes featuring The Doctor working on his chore to delete himself from the databanks of the world, he and River Song in one of their various unseen adventures, and Clara having a heart-to-heart with the Tardis.
After a change in heart, it also features both Christmas episodes, Jenna Coleman‘s first (official) episode The Snowmen as well as the previous year’s The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe.

River Song having her own show? Yowzah!
The craziest Pond has had more adventures with the Doctor than was shown on Who, as was implied multiple times on the show. It definitely deserves more than a couple of 3-minute webisodes (Night and the Doctor), for the sheer awesomeness of the character alone.
I mean, I, personally, would follow that show more avidly than the gradually depreciating Torchwood series. Not that there is something wrong with Jark Harkness, that character definitely deserved the spin-off, only that the show went a totally different way than expected.
A River Song spin-off may not yet be in Steven Moffatt’s mind, nor would fans (Doctor Who/Sherlock) want to divide his attention, but here are five reasons to think about when deciding for yourselves whether or not River deserves a full spin off TV Show or at least, more of the shorter fast-paced minisodes...

The BBC will make a number of shows available to view online before their TV transmission.

I’ll admit something upfront: I’m a fairly new Whovian. I’m far from the expert-types who you might expect to write a review of the first episode of the new season, which aired tonight. But I will say this: I think my story is more common than not. Despite being able to fill up Comic-Con’s Hall H and gracing the cover of some pretty fine magazines, there are still many people who have yet to be romanced by Doctor Who. My plea to them? You don’t know what you’re missing.

There are some television shows so involving, so emotional, and so impactful, that it seems mere words can’t do them justice. Doctor Who is just such a show, and Steven Moffat’s ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ is an episode that exemplifies this.
Yet, when you think about it, the brilliance of such shows derives ultimately from the writing, which is, essentially, words on a page. Just really, really good words. That happen to fit together in really clever ways. It takes a genius such as Steven Moffat to translate words into emotion so fluently. But if words can form the basis of stories like these, then maybe they can also engage with those stories, however inadequately.
So, here is an attempted review of ‘Asylum of the Daleks’. Rather than recapping all the events of the episode, it’ll instead try to explore some of the themes that the episode plays out so beautifully.

Leading up to the highly anticipated seventh season of NuWho (which premieres today, Saturday 1 September), the BBC put the five-part Doctor Who mini-series Pond Life online this week, and all five parts are now available to watch below.
Written by Chris Chibnall (who, in addition to his Doctor Who work, wrote some of the best episodes of Torchwood: ‘Cyberwoman’, ‘Adrift’, ‘Fragments’, and ‘Exit Wounds’), the mini-series is episodic yet forms one overall, larger story, like life.
[spoilers for Pond Life, Doctor Who S6, and the 2011 Christmas special follow]
Whereas the various episode prequels mostly provided atmosphere and hints and clues, this has more of a story, and lots of fun moments (mostly due to the Doctor).
While each episode is only around a minute or so in length, they generally pack in a lot of story and amusing details.
Episode 1 features a lot of these moments, as the Doctor offers a rapid-fire recap of what he’s been up to lately.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a…well, anyway.
This week, as a run-up to the season premiere of Doctor Who, a mini web-series titled “Pond Life”, intended to share a look at the Ponds’ home life in between visits by The Doctor. It was four episodes of entertaining fun, right up until the moment Steven Moffat and writer Chris Chibnall seized our hearts, turned them sideways, and made a tasty broth from our tears.
Each episode summarizes a month between April and August, leading into the events of the first episode, Asylum of the Daleks. All five episodes of “Pond Life” are available on the BBC YouTube channel, mirrored on numerous websites, and is written into the sullen expressions of Who-fen everywhere. Doctor Who is an international phenomenon. It’s the longest-running genre series in television history (2013 is its 50th anniversary) with a rabid fan base and, since its return in 2005, fairly wide-spread critical acclaim. With such a long history, it would be easy to feel intimidated or unable to jump in, but Doctor Who constantly reinvents itself, providing any number of valid jumping in points. With series seven beginning this Saturday, Sept. 1st on BBC America, now’s as good a time as any to check it out and see what all the buzz is about. For those who still want some backstory, here are some basics about each of the main characters, and make sure to check out the Doctor Who season premiere this Saturday!

All this week from the BBC, a miniseries of minisodes, “Pond Life,” leading us into “Asylum of the Daleks” on Saturday. Here are the first three parts: [video] Mata Hari gives the Doctor a crumpet erection? *facepalm* I guess it was a cheesy crumpet. But Amy and Rory don’t even listen all the way through to the end of his message? Or maybe they’ve already done what I would do, which is listen to it about a dozen times before deleting it? [video] You can just take it as a given that I’ve imagined the Doctor bursting into my bedroom... [video] “Ood on the loo.” Great. Toilet humor. That’s what Doctor Who has been missing... Two more minisodes to come: one tomorrow, one Friday. (If you stumble across a cool Doctor Who thing, feel free to email me with a link.)...

Last Saturday was a busy day if you were a Doctor Who fan in New York City. The first episode of the new series, Asylum of the Daleks, had its Us premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater, the largest single-screen theater in the city they could lay their hands on. After a minor frenzy to obtain tickets, fans were treated to an hour-long thrill ride as The Doctor and his friends Amy and Rory fought against more Daleks than you could shake an eye-stalk at.
