Street Scene

This one is interesting not so much for its subject matter - the collection of mail from a post box - but for the scenes of everyday life in 1903. The camera focuses on the mail box, but a variety of people pass by: an old well-dressed guy in a straw boater hobbles past at one point. He must have been born in the 1830s or so and it's incredible to think that I can watch, in 2009, the movements of a man born nearly two centuries ago. The location looks like a city, but this being 1903 there are few cars on the roads - although there are plenty of horse-and-buggy contraptions. The women still dress in Victorian garb, although less than 20 years later they would be brazenly displaying ankles and calves.
