Lots of action, not so much sense.

Here's a classic example of the inferior quality of the Universal shorts, even at a time when they were putting a few dollars into it. The story is as thin as a one sentence summary; " The Gumps go to an amusement park, and then go home." It's packed with contrived, obvious gags like: switching out a blown tire on his car, the balloon on the replacement is already ruptured, so he cuts away that section. Nowhere to go, it apparently meant no further problems, so off they go. He goes fishing, and to keep a caught fish "quiet", he produces a heretofore unseen rifle and lets go with a blast that puts a hole in the bottom of the boat they're in. He doesn't notice until he's underwater. Walking along later, they encounter the midway guess-your-weight guy. Apropos of nothing, Andy asks him to allow him to guess the weight of a fat woman nearby. He says go ahead, and then, confronted by the woman, Andy's all flustered and nervous as if he's been forced to do it. Of course, he overstates her poundage, so she slugs him, but getting to a quick burst of violence at any cost in logic or coherence is not worth it. Also, the ghastly phony noses on Andy and Uncle Bim are stunning.

The Gumps on Vacation
boblipton4 March 2014
Do you enjoy live action movies made from comics? Are you a fan of SIN CITY or 300 or the Avengers movies from Disney's Marvel division? American film makers have been converting cartoons and comics into live-action movies at least since 1904's Buster Brown movies. Here's one from the "Andy Gump" series from Sidney Smith. They go on vacation with Uncle Bim and get into a series of disasters. Unfortunately, what was very amusing in a four-strip daily cartoon that you would read in less than a minute becomes tiresome in sequence after sequence for twenty minutes.

There is a lot of real talent involved here, from director Norman Taurog to actress Fay Tincher to Joe Murphy, who plays the long-nosed, chinless Andy in heavy make-up that makes him look a lot like the cartoon. Unhappily, the set-ups to the papa-is-a-dope gags telegraph the pay-offs. While fans of the strip must have been pleased to see the Gumps brought to life and the gags executed competently, there isn't much more to this movie.

An enjoyable outing.

"Oh! What a Day!" is a film based on the Andy Gump comic strip and in the 1920s Universal Studios made about four dozen of them. I've only seen this one but it's enjoyable and fun...and it made me want to see more.

The film is introduced by the comic strip illustrator, Sidney Smith. What follows is a day out for the Gumps to the beach. Not surprisingly, again and again, they make a mess of things...particularly Andy. And, like he did in the strips, he frequently yells for his wife, Min, when he gets into trouble. A few of the gags are limp, but there are so many that some are guaranteed to make you chuckle. Overall, a fun little film which is a bit better than the average comedy short of the era.
