Elopement in the Cards

This is a pretty good Sennett late silent as Ralph Graves and gorgeous Thelma Parr try to elope, but nothing works out for them -- they keep running into insurance salesman Marvin Loback, who's pretty good in this one.

Sennett still bears the reputation of being a slapstick primitive, but the King of Comedy was actually a savvy, urbane businessman who knew to vary his product. Here this is a pretty much straight situation comedy with a well-written and performed script and a lot of leavening of good sight gags. If you're fond of silent comedy but haven't ventured much out of Hal Roach territory because the Keystones terrify you, this might b a valuable corrective.
