Two men sit in their local pub during the day when one decides to take a quick walk down to the bookies to place a bet on a horse. When he arrives at the bookies he places his bets with the couple of other punters there. He also bumps into the son of an old friend of his in there as well. However things get complicated when the boy holds up the shop and demands all the money from behind the counter.
This was written after being inspired by one of the writers living opposite a street with a bookies and a pub at either end. He used to see these old men walk from one to the other all day and wonder how many stories there are there. So he wrote one. This is actually quite good. It doesn't have a deep meaning and is perhaps a little lacking in the Hollywood thrills of the usual robbery, but it is involving and interesting and the finale is suitably low-key for the UK!
It isn't flashy but it is quite gripping. It also is amusing as it is laced with the inadequacies of the robber without making him some sort of clown character to be made fun of easily. The two main actors carry their role really well. Terry being caught between protecting the lad and also himself, while the lad's incompetence and apologies for it are very well brought out.
Overall this is a simple film that has no illusions of being a deep and meaningful piece of art (or pretentious for that matter!). It is a well thought out little story that lacks glamour but is real and all the better for it. It may feel like it's building to nowhere but it is enjoyable nonetheless.
