This was highly entertaining!!!
I was most dissapointed that this particular "Young People's Concert" was not included in the Sony/Kulter 10 VHS set from a from five or six years back. I watched all of the "Young People's Concerts" while growing up, and this "Planets" program from 1972 (it may have been the very last "Young People's Concert"), I believe, was the most enthralling for me. This was my introduction to "The Planets", and from the very first beat of "Mars-The Bringer of War", Lenny had my complete and undivided attention. Lenny also composed a fascinating "Pluto" movement to conclude the program, since Holst composed the work before this planets discovery. This was the climax of the entire program for me. Lenny's "Pluto" was just wild beyond belief. The program was taped just when Lenny was making his recording of "The Planets" for Columbia Masterworks. How dissapointing it was for me that his "Pluto" movement was not included in that recording. Would anyone know if a recording of it exists in Sony's vaults!!!?? This was the ONLY time I ever heard Lenny's "Pluto". When his "Planets" recording was re-issued in Sony's new Bernstein Century Series, again, no "Pluto" by Bernstein was included as a bonus. Finally, does anybody have a VHS or DVD of this unreleased "Young Peoples Concert"?? I would be forever beholden if a copy of this could ever reach my hands, to supplement my Sony/Kulter 10 VHS set.
