The 'forgotten' DCAU show
Milk_Tray_Guy14 January 2023
Gotham Girls is a series of web shorts produced by Warner Bros from 2000 to 2002 (three seasons of 10 episodes each), focusing on the female superheroes and supervillains of Gotham City. Every episode features Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. Recurring characters include Zatanna, Renee Montoya, and the only prominent male character, Commissioner Jim Gordon.

All episodes of the first two seasons are self-contained and very comedic, whilst the third season shifts to a more serious tone, and tells a connecting story (around 30 mins long in all) about the mysterious disappearance of every male in Gotham City, and how Batgirl, Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman put aside their differences and work together to solve the mystery and bring the men back. The show is set firmly in the DCAU, with the same distinctive character designs and general art style, with several BTAS/TNBA voice actors reprising their roles,

Tara Strong - Batgirl, Arleen Sorkin - Harley Quinn, Diane Pershing - Poison Ivy, Adrienne Barbeau - Catwoman (Barbeau also takes over the role of Renee Montoya), and Bob Hastings - Commissioner Gordon

The first two seasons range from mildly amusing to occasionally laugh-out-loud, whilst the third is pretty gripping and wouldn't have felt out of place in BTAS/TNBA. All the returning voice actors are note-perfect, and the supporting cast do a fine job. 7.5/10.

Harley and company

Warning: Spoilers
At the beginning of the 2000s, several processes took place that made their contribution to history - increasingly massive computerization and, along with it, the spread of the World Wide Web. At the same time the now buried Flash format gained wide popularity, which had a place ranging from purely technical applications to the areas of games and animation. The combination of these factors, not least of all, contributed to the creation of a specific product, which will be discussed further.

"Batman: The Animated Series" (1992-1994). A cult animated series that set the standard for animation for many years, among other things, once again demonstrating that cartoons can be far from just for children. The dark, noir atmosphere, combined with the raising of many serious topics, was significantly different from what was often offered to the public previously. Guided by the principle of "strike while the iron is hot" Warner Bros. Animation commissioned a studio called Noodle Soup Productions to develop a series consisting of two-minute sketches, with several conditions set:

* The predominantly female half of the animated series roster should have been involved - Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Batgirl and Zatanna.

* The series was supposed to be produced in flash animation format.

* Distribute it via the World Wide Web - there were still about 5-6 years left before the beta version of YouTube appeared.

* Each episode had to include certain mini-games, or it was supposed to have some kind of interactivity. So, for example, in the first episode, on the one hand, the viewer / player had to spin a kind of one-armed bandit in order to obtain the same card combination and on the other hand, when Harley began to chew gum, adjust the degree of inflation of the bubble from such in order to subsequently pierce it with a needle and see how the series continues after this event.

In total thirty-one episodes were released, with a total duration of approximately one and a half hours. The third episode, unlike the first two, was limited to only one game and virtually no interactivity, while at the same time all ten episodes were covered by one storyline.

It is difficult to evaluate such a product according to typical criteria for "regular" animation, as well as games. It's most logical to compare it with something similar in spirit and the closest analogues here are either not very well-known interactive books, here you can remember "Treasure Island" (1995), or drawing games in the style of "The Adventures of Batman & Robin Cartoon Maker" (1995), where they offer to make a kind of simple cartoon from existing blanks and then see what the output is. Going even further, you can dig up things like "Dinosaur Safari" (1996), where the well-hidden core of the gameplay was an early version of the Quick Time video player. In this context, "Gotham Girls" subjectively looks quite good and, in terms of diversity, differs favorably from the first two examples. Otherwise, this creation is more likely to be considered as an addition to the original animated series, rather than as a separate work.

Another, not very well-known character in the DC universe, Lobo, was also presented in a similar format. The timing turned out to be the same, but the number of episodes was half as much - fifteen, the series was limited to one season. The average rating and audience demand turned out to be lower, not least due to not the most successful animation.

In the end I'll also add that if someone wants a larger-scale "continuation of the banquet" then, in the context of games similar in style, you can pay attention to "Batman: Vengeance" (2001) (PC), which can be completed in about three hours, as well as "The Adventures of Batman & Robin" (1994) (SNES, Sega Genesis), which will take approximately one and a half to two hours.

"Gotham Girls" is a web-series on the WB's official site. It follows the femme fatals and the heroines from "Batman" around Gotham City. The character designs are hip and sexy, taking after the style of the animated series. Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl are the focus of the series. We get a variety of episodes from a pointless, but fun, day to an absorbing mystery given in segments. This show is an excellent example of a well done web-toon. It has good animation and the original voices from the series.

I recommend this show to any fans of "Batman" or anyone just looking for something entertaining to watch.

This is what DC Super Hero girls should be like

Warning: Spoilers
I saw a few shorts of this online animation and I have to say I am very impressed.

If you want to have a DC show which is aimed at girls then I would suggest that parents should convince their daughters to look into this show instead of DC Superhero Girls which I am not very happy with at the moment (Read my review on it)

The best part is that these shorts aren't even brutal or messed up in any way what so ever. Like Lobo web search was. Okay, one episode is pretty messed up where Poison Ivy plants a seed in the mayors head if he lies then a plant will grow.

I have not seen every single short I have only seen the ones with Batgirl and Zatanna. Also, the ones that Dee Baker has voiced in.

What the Who?
ThunderKing61 July 2021
Who wanted this? 20 year later they made almost the same product that no one asked for or cared about.

Hollyweird doesn't learn. Nor do they care.

Like Batman cartoons? Depressed that all we have left in terms of new episodes is the decidedly sub-par "The Batman" series? Check out these shorts for a reminder of when WB's Batman cartoons were exciting, sharp, and funny.

The plot concerns the eyebrow-raising prospect of all of Gotham's men suddenly disappearing, slashing Gotham's police department by %80 and leaving the costumed villain count at three (Baby Doll appears to be M.I.A). The flash animation is a little iffy at times, but great character design and quick pacing makes it highly watchable. Plus you get the same great voice acting as the series - Arleen Sorkin as Harley is reason enough to watch anything. Not to mention what may be Gotham's first trans-gendered cop! What's not to like?!

I mean...
CollinTucek16 November 2023
It's not good. The story was... ehhh... most episodes are just random nonsense. The episodes that actually had a story were also bad but i guess someone out there is going to like it. I just feel like when watching the DCAU (DC Animated Universe) This is just not worth watching it has no impact on the main story at all. The characters are... somewhat good... Harley is still the sociopath she is and ivy is still crazy about plants and catwoman is still a Jewl thief so i guess for what it is it's what it's made to be and that's really all i can say about this online web series. Thanks for reading.

Gotham Girls and Online Animation
paronge2 December 2005
I enjoyed Gotham Girls very much and would love to see new episodes of this online series. It was amazing to see characters I have been familiar with all my life on the Internet. Would love to see more online animation with both DC and Marvel characters. With broadband technology we can see more of this in the near future hopefully. Already we can see music videos, news and some people already are getting movies on their computers I hear. I don't know if it should go that far, since that is what the big flat screen TV's are for. Batgirl has always been one of my favorite characters next to Batman himself. One of the best things of animation has always been strong vocal characterizations starting with the old radio actors down to todays generation of vocal actors.
