One man gets lost in the wilderness and finds his soul
bigbearjoe21 August 2006
The movie opens with vast panoramas of the Sierra Nevada wilderness. You know from the start it's a nature flick and that's not a negative, I really enjoyed the film. The plots evolves around Jannie Harrington's discovery of a rare plant on a tract of wilderness that is slated for destruction from a mining operation. The greens had no way to save the area till now. Only problem Harrington gets caught in a blizzard right after the discovery and gets hypothermia. She loses her location notes. Doc Macallister is one of the owners of the mining operation and gets word of the discovery and tries to destroy the plants before they can be relocated. Doc get lost in the wilderness and has a near death experience which a changes his outlook on wilderness and life in general. The movie is really about Doc rediscovering who he really is. Though obviously not a big budget film it still had a lot of heart. If your looking for a fast paced big budget edgy drama this isn't it. This movie reminds me more of the older classic style films, a slower pace, more scenery and music, very visual and more internal. Though it did have some great humorous moments and a few off the wall characters. The message of the film was subtle but still came through, "wilderness is worth fighting for, it is where we go to connect with our real selves- our ancient and primal selves. " If you have any appreciation for nature and wild places you'll like this movie.

In his heart, he knows she's right.

Beautiful scenery, and characters you believe in. This film captures the magic and mystery of California's High Sierra, and the inner beauty of its' characters hearts. An ensemble cast that brings the story to life while disappearing into their roles. A fine film.
