A mix of social criticism and cultural introspection
zzmale30 March 2004
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: The Life and Death of Gambling.

This movie is a mixture of contemporary cultural introspection and social criticism. It's a social criticism in that it directly criticized the not-so-favorite parts of the traditional culture, namely, the gambling, which reappeared after the reform, because as soon as people have some money in their pocket, the bad habit of gambling returns. It is also a social critic work in that it indirectly criticized the neglect of cultural development by the government which resulted in encouraging gambling as a form of entertainment.
