The documentary is about life under the brutal Duvalier regime in Haiti. Shot in a very loose and poetic style, it can be likened to a hallucinatory counterpart to Resnais' more meditative "Night and Fog". It uses secretly filmed footage combined with a melange of clips from many other sources, some of which may be from real documentaries and some of which may be fictional. The reality is sometimes difficult to discern, but some of the most disturbing images are way too real to possibly have been staged. Duvalier's tyranny extends even to the spiritual realm, as voodoo priests are employed in an attempt to control even the souls of the people of Haiti. Years of US complicity and willful ignorance by the rest of the world only compound the brutality. Yet the film also tries to show the beauty and the magic of country and its people. Krik? Krak! is a journey not for the faint of heart, but an important film nonetheless.
