I saw this feature back to back with the filmmaker's other film (see Bid Me Run review). This is quite a departure in theme but the author remains true to his style. I found this to be very informative, almost educational as the film opens with some really nice montage of traditional cultural dance. Again, the viewer has a lot of historical context to digest. We are treated to some ancient traditions and old values of Confucianism and Buddhism and their effects on a society. The subjects interviewed guide the viewer with great direct knowledge and the film has some very nice footage from the China before it became what we know China to be today. The story evolves around the aging of immigrant community and the values that are lost as the world changes. The beauty of tradition and culture in juxtaposition with the new world is less of a dark message as it is a call to everyone to embrace the great values taught by our older generations before they get completely lost. Another great, moving and very stylish film.
