As TV execs continue to hunt for the next big reality hit, NBCUniversal International Television Production is supercharging its unscripted business. The group has launched a dedicated unscripted development unit to be overseen by Svp of factual and entertainment, David Mortimer. The focus will be on creating big entertainment formats for the global market. The division will be made up of two complimentary teams, one focused on so-called “shiny floor entertainment shows,” and the other on returnable high-end factual entertainment formats. The in-house unit will exist alongside unscripted production companies Monkey Kingdom and Chocolate Media in the UK, Matchbox Pictures in Australia and Lark Productions in Canada. Mortimer, a former BBC exec who joined NBCUniversal in May, has a track record that includes Dragons’ Den, Great Britons, The Weakest Link and The Office. He’s bullish on NBCU’s investment in development, saying, “We are determined to be the home...

Charlotte Moore has been appointed acting controller of BBC One.
The current commissioning editor of documentaries will hold the role until a permanent appointment is made.
The announcement was made by outgoing BBC One controller Danny Cohen, who becomes BBC director of television on May 7.
"Charlotte is a fantastic creative leader and I'm confident she will do a great job as interim controller following her spell recently in charge of the BBC Daytime portfolio," Cohen said.
"The most important thing is that we carry on with business as usual and Charlotte will be empowered to make commissioning decisions and maintain BBC One's momentum."
Moore's past credits as producer/director have included Lagos Airport (Channel 4), Great Britons: Churchill (BBC Two) and Living With Cancer (BBC One).
She became head of documentaries at Iwc Media, before joining the BBC four years ago as commissioning executive of documentaries and was...

27 July: the actor relives working with Danny Boyle to help create the dazzling opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics
I was in Liverpool on a location scout for the film Jack Ryan when I got the call. Danny Boyle rang me and explained that they'd had a great tragedy – Mark Rylance's daughter had passed away and he was pulling out of his role in the opening ceremony. He asked if I would take over. I was standing on a street corner and I was so shocked at Mark's news that I didn't really take in the second part.
A couple of days later I went to see Danny at the Olympic Stadium. It was three weeks before the ceremony and the place was packed with thousands of people all doing things impressively. Danny seemed to know everybody's first name – it was like taking a walk with the Pied Piper. We...

Actor Richard E. Grant is seeking out moviemaking talent for a contest to find a fitting film to launch the London Olympics next year.
The Withnail and I star has teamed up with chef Heston Blumenthal and artist Tracey Emin to hunt for talented people as part of the British Airways Great Britons Programme.
Grant is on the look out for a scriptwriter to pen a short film, which will be shown on all BA flights after it premieres at the opening of the 2012 games.
He tells Britain's Ok! TV, "This is an incredible opportunity that BA have set out. They've got Heston Blumenthal creating a menu for people on BA and I've been asked to find a script writer, to make a short film that will be shown on all BA flights next year and in the pre-ceremony opening for the Olympics, so it's an incredible platform to flush out and find new talent."...
