The Super Houseman/housekeeper
samratrc14179 May 2006
This is one of the classics of Bengali comedies. Hilarious yet having a very relevant social message. Directed by one of the great directors of Bengal Mr. Tapan Sinha and starring one of Bengali film industries comic geniuses Mr. Rabi Ghosh ,this film entertains people some of whom were born after Rabi Ghosh died. Its evergreen. Its also been remade in several Indian languages, the most prominent one was in Hindi called 'Bawarchi' starring Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bhadhuri. Ghosh plays a manservant cum cook who shows up one day at a very dysfunctional family who is suffering a crisis – lack of domestic help and consequently chaos reign in the household. They hire him. He immediately takes over and takes complete control of the running of day to day affairs. He's so good that its comical the way he handles everything so masterfully. He is to housekeepers what Mary Poppins is to nannies/governesses. Gradually he cures the family off its dysfunctional aspects. This movie has a great ensemble cast of actors who are all great in their roles and still ranks as one of the greatest films from 'Tollywood'. And the best part is that it never ceases to be funny/feel-good even on viewing multiple times. Watch it with family and friends and I promise you a very quality time. Happy Viewing folks!

WARNING! Its in Black and White and for folks with new fangled gadgetry its a sacrilege. Keep an open mind and watch it anyway.

Uplifting, clean fun at no one's expense
ghanti7 August 2013
I was recently watching Nakache's "Intouchables" and that reminded me of this one, a story of how one man's appearance changes the dysfunctional dynamics of a large family. I was staggered that this movie has an IMDb weighted average of 4.4 (I see it's actually 8.4; must have made a mistake the day I wrote this review. Apologies). I regard it as one of the best comedy movies I have watched. The film is so successful in what it set out to achieve it appears effortless. Presenting a complex idea in a simple story that provides clean fun at no one's expense, it is an uplifting fantasy that should appeal to a wide range of audience. The actors are almost natural in their roles and do not have to resort to desperate frivolities to elicit a laugh. Similarly, there are no noticeably stylised camera shots that distract from the narrative.

It is not a crude comedy and no one should expect a Johnny Leveresque crassness and that is the strength of this film. This film is fun but it hurts no one in the process and that is a hard act to pull off indeed.

"one of the best original movies made by any Indian director"
smkbsws16 September 2020
This is the best of Sinha, no doubt. Not only among the great fives, but this is one of the best original movies made by any Indian director. This movie has been adapted in multiple languages. Now I can recall about at least five movies inspired this one. I know whoever is reading the review must have watched this film, but if not, disconnect from internet and buy the film as the first thing - this is not a request, an order.

The story has a similarities with The Bishop's Wife and It's a wonderful life. But the scenario is purely Indian. And the problems solved here are without any miracle.

It's a lesson for all .

I don't know how much of an impact this movie has had on today's generation . In the movie "Galpa Haleo Sotti", people's conscience and individual consciousness have been awakened. The story shows the rhythm, variety and joy that can be found in each work. The daily life of a middle class family, the complexities of the world, family conflicts, quarrels, violence have been highlighted. However, there is a deep sense of humor hidden in this story.

In this story, a new person appears to remove the darkness of the mind, simplify the complex aspects of life, put a smile on people's faces and show the depth of the relationship.

What is the solution to all the problems of the world in a beautiful moment, the way to live a new way of life can be strengthened through this movie.

Legendary director "Tapan Sinha" and exceptional actor "Ravi Ghosh" have taken the movie to another level.. But let me also say that those who were in the side characters have strengthened the foundation of the story with their extraordinary acting ability

The main purpose of this film is to show the direction of light by removing the darkness of the mind.

Dhananjay: Unraveling the Tapestry of Family and Philosophy
shpndipu16 March 2024
One of the finest cinematic gems in the Bengali language, this movie stands as a testament to the essence of family dynamics in mid-20th century urban Bengal. Set against the backdrop of a society yet untouched by the ultraleftist movement, it offers a poignant portrayal of the intricate fabric of familial relationships. Unofficially considered the first installment of Tapan Sinha's revered 'Calcutta trilogy', alongside 'Aponjon' and 'Ekhoni', it captivates audiences with its unique storyline and enchanting background music-both trademarks of Tapanbabu's cinematic brilliance.

However, beyond its captivating narrative lies the true allure of this masterpiece-the natural and captivating performances by every actor, male and female alike. Each character breathes life into the screen with their impeccable portrayal, while the flawless screenplay keeps viewers engaged till the credits roll. Amidst the layers of storytelling, a subtle yet profound supernatural and philosophical theme weaves its way, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.

In the realm of 'movies on Calcutta' from that era, this stands out as a singular creation, blending humor and philosophy seamlessly. Among the nine films crafted by the esteemed trio of Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray, and Tapan Sinha, this movie emerges as a unique gem, offering a refreshing take on the genre.

In conclusion, as the timeless wisdom of Dhananjay resonates within each of us, this movie serves as a gentle reminder to seek and nurture the essence of goodness within, for the betterment of humanity. Truly, it is a cinematic masterpiece that transcends time and leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of its viewers.

Bangla black and white gem
anjumhaz15 July 2022
In this black and white epic, we see Ravi Ghosh as Dhananjoy, a stranger who suddenly arrives at a home and alters the life of the family living there. The acting of Ravi Ghosh and the exceptional story of the film bring this to a height for all time!

A film which is still so relevant to our contemporary society.
cultivatingcinema21 August 2020
In Childhood, this cinema was always a collective and enchanting experience. It never bored me and I enjoyed watching it. But as I grow up started learning about film language, this film becomes more interesting to me.

Tapan Sinha, tells us a simple family drama in very much in his own unique way. But it conveys a universal message of simplifying our lives.

At this time, when we all are isolated someway, mostly having no humanly contact (touch), this film helps to stay afloat. It delivers a message of universal brotherhood - in a metaphor of Bengali family in 1966 Bengal. When Bengal was going through turmoil like student & food revolution.

But, Tapan Sinha want us value the small things in our life rather then materialistic possessions. The true happiness comes from being with family and from inside.

Kudos to Sinha for making such film which is still so relevant to our contemporary depreciating society.
