Huh?!

When it comes to plot, there just isn't much in "Indoor Sports by Tad". Because of this, it's a very forgettable film--even if it is an early example of animation.

The film begins with an obese woman going to the shoe store and insisting she's a size 3 1/2--though she's obviously much larger. Then, out of the blue, a cat and a stick figure appear and make fun of the woman--making fat jokes and the like. Then, abruptly, the film ends. I can only assume the final portion is missing. Overall, there isn't much plot and the film mostly consists of characters making fun of a fat lady. Not exactly enlightened entertainment, huh?! And, not particularly entertaining or distinguished.

Indoor Sports by Tad was primitively fascinating as early animation and nothing more

Warning: Spoilers
Just watched on the UCLA Preserved Silent Animation site this short gag cartoon from the International Film Service. The "Tad" of the title is one Thomas Dorgan who created a series of strips called "Indoor Sports" for the International Feature Syndicate among others he did like "Outdoor Sports", etc. This cartoon-while based on his strip-was actually animated by a Paul D. Robinson who eventually had his own strip for IFS's successor, King Features Syndicate, called "Etta Kett" which lasted from 1925 to 1974. Anyway, in this one, a somewhat heavyset woman is at a shoe store and feels insulted when she gets offered a size 8 since she always gets a three and a half. This gets a cat and a little stick figure that seem to be in a different place at a swimming hole commenting on that woman's comments like the feline saying, "Three and a Half? That's rich. I bet you could write the Declaration of Independence on both those soles of violin cases she wears!" For the two minutes of this cartoon, you see similar insults before that cat and that stick figure dive in the water. The end. Part of me was amused and it's always fascinating to watch early animation like this but to tell you the truth, this short is very much lame by current standards. Indoor Sports by Tad is worth a look for animation buffs and nothing more.
