“Walking Dead” actress Ann Mahoney launches a crowdfunding campaign for upcoming faith-based comedy “Preaching to the Choir” “I have been going to the same little church since I was two years- old, my mother is the organist, and my dad is the choir director, so I was in church every Sunday. I was raised in the United Methodist church, but I was raised by parents who really emphasized to me that we come from a place of no judgment.” Says Mahoney. Mahoney hopes that “Preaching to the Choir” a faith-based comedy show designed for TV will dispel the myths around...

In addition to being really into comics, I’m also really into history. I like to know where things came from and how they were made. This fact about myself has resulted in my reading of quite a few comics from the Golden and Silver Ages. Nearly all were reprints, but comics of those ages none the less. Although some of the comics then may not offer us the kinds of lessons in diversity and inclusion I’m normally advocating for, they actually do give us a valuable lesson in diversity that is lacking in mainstream comics today.
The norm for decades in comics was an anthology format. Marvel Mystery, Adventure, Action, Detective, Showcase, Journey Into Mystery, Police, Crime Does Not Pay, Eerie, Creepy, My Greatest Adventure, all of these and more would offer us up multiple stories featuring different characters in each. The first issue of Marvel Comics featured the Human Torch,...

Pawnee's most striking countenance has evolved into a new manimal, as Nick Offerman's upper lip is finally getting some fresh air. MTV said Offerman's mustache-less face looked like that of a garden gnome, and although that is accurate, it is also semi-mean. So let's be pretend-nice for the next five or so minutes and say his transformed mug looks like the Mona Lisa, but with a chin strap, because Nick Offerman — mustache or no mustache — is a national treasure. (Okay, fine, Mona Lisa or an older Mose Schrute, whatever.) The actor was spotted without his notorious whiskers at the Sundance Film Festival, where he's been promoting his new film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Here's what Offerman 2.0 looks like: Preaching to the choir: One can only hope: Either smizing or longing for a mustache: All good things must come to an end, so with that we...

So, is everyone sick to death of people talking about the end of Mass Effect 3? Heard enough ‘entitled whining’ for a lifetime? Think that after months of this crap it’s time for unhappy fans to just move on with their lives? Cool. Hey, I hear you. Couldn’t agree more. Preaching to the choir and all that. Yeah…
So anyway, here’s why I didn’t like Mass Effect 3…
Some time ago, before the release of the Extended Cut, I was asked what my first experience was when finishing the Mass Effect saga – and I realised with the posing of that question that on some level I had been trying to avoid thinking through the emotion of that experience too much.* Until that point I had been speaking through the mechanics of narrative and the manipulation of form to rationalise my experience (all of which I still heartily believe...

We open on Air Force Three where Susan and Dougie are watching a TV news report on the American rescue of the Chinese sub off the coast of California, then we cut to the White House Situation Room where they’re watching the same but with U.S. Naval commentary because they sprung for the DirectTV Global Rescue Package.
In the hospital, T.J. is in sedation until all the cocaine is out of his system. So, they’re giving him drugs to help him recover from a drug overdose? Odd, isn’t it? (Excuse me while I go mix a vodka and tonic. Still feeling a little fuzzy from those bottomless mimosas at brunch.) Now, where was I? Oh yeah, Elaine wants to move T.J. into Casa Barrish so Margaret and Ann need to spruce the place up. Everyone decides to keep the overdose quiet, especially because Dougie...

Chicago – ABC/Disney has released three of their Spring 2012 mid-season shows on DVD in time for, well, to say goodbye to two of them and catch up on the third. The releases for “Gcb” and “Missing” could have been labeled “Complete Series” as ABC pulled the plug on both shows but Shonda Rhimes’ “Scandal” is being given another chance to find a larger audience in the Fall. All three sets are well-loaded with special features.
To this critic, the show that ABC decided to give more time to grow — “Scandal” with Kerry Washington & Tony Goldwyn — is also the best DVD set to pick up. While “Missing” had some solid elements (including some well-choreographed action and a strong central performance from Ashley Judd), “Gcb” was little more than a “Desperate Housewives” clone before the original had even left through the Exit door. It was too soon, especially with the success of...

Listen, a show called "The Lying Game" implies a certain amount of deception with the title alone. But the Season 1 finale packed quite a punch in the cliffhanger department -- especially since right now, Season 2 isn't officially happening just yet.
During the episode, Kristin more than any other vocalized what we've all been thinking as the show went along: "Why is it around here the first thing out of people's mouths is a lie? Is it our city? Is it our families? Maybe it's the water." Preaching to the choir, sister. What the heck is up with the people on this show?
Well, we didn't get an answer to that question, but there was on heck of a bomb dropped at the end of the night. If you thought Charisma Carpenter and Alexandra Chando looked identical, you weren't alone: the writers did too. How else could you explain the revelation...

Need something to get you started on this cold January morning, maybe as you realize the holidays are over and all that lies ahead of you is the interminable gray stretch of the late winter months? (Sorry if that brought any of you down. Sorry if you can't handle the truth. Unless you live somewhere warm or the southern hemisphere. You may gloat.) Well, the good folks from Portlandia — that would be Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag's Carrie Brownstein and Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen — are here to help, with this delightful cover of Salt-n-Pepa's 1987 hit "Push It." And they brought along some friends, indie musicians Mirah and Thao, to help: This performance was part of the show's "Preaching To the Choir" tour before the premiere of the second season Friday on IFC. (It's not really named that, but let'[...]...

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: Feb. 14, 2012
Price: DVD Tba
Studio: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
Musical movie Mama, I Want To Sing is based on the off-Broadway hit play by Vy Higginsen.
The film stars multi-platinum-selling artist Ciara as Amara, a young gospel singer who dreams of pop stardom, naturally. Discovered by agents, Amara is swept away from her tight-knit community for recording sessions and television appearances.
As she pursues her music career, however, Amara’s relationship with her preacher mother (Lynn Whitfield, The Women) is strained, as her mother wants her to stay grounded. As she navigates the often treacherous world of celebrity and still remain true to herself and her family, Amara turns to her father (Marvin Winans, TV’s House of Payne) and Sister Carrie (Patti Labelle, Semi-Pro) for support.
Rated PG, Mama, I Want To Sing also stars Billy Zane (Sniper Reloaded), Hill Harper (For Colored Girls...

Our Halloween Memories series has focused on our favorite women currently working in the horror and genre arena. So, of course, we couldn't end without talking to the woman dearest to Planet Fury's bloody little heart: our very own editor-in-chief, Heidi Honeycutt.
Though she works mainly as a journalist these days, Heidi has been kicking around the entertainment industry for years now, doing a little bit of everything for everybody. In recent memory, Heidi has acted in horror flicks; she's written, directed and produced films; she's designed websites; she's hosted radio shows; she's babysat certain insufferable celebrity children. And of course, there's the whole "created Pretty/Scary and FanGirlTastic and Planet Fury" deal. She's a busy, busy lady.
So, when I contacted Heidi to see if she'd be interested in reminiscing about Halloween, she agreed immediately and promised to follow up soon. Then, I waited. And waited. Finally, Heidi got...

In our last interview installment, comedian and Ufc commentator Joe Rogan talked about being a fan of horror books and movies, psychedelic drugs, growing up wanting to be an artist, and how dangerous both chimps and polar bears can be. In this, our second part of three, Dread Central delves deeper into the mind and philosophy of Mr. Rogan.
Once again, it should be said that the following interview includes some of the notorious “7 words” George Carlin warned you about. So buckle up…
DC: You once showed some drawings on your podcast that you did back when you were younger, and they were quite good. Was drawing something you lost interest in and replaced with something else?
Jr: I had a bad high school art teacher who was kind of a dildo. He was one of those guys who was always telling you that life was going to suck. “You...

Reposting this from Friday. I got lots of helpful responses, and even learned of a couple of titles that I didn’t know existed. So, here’s the post again, to continue the flow, in case you missed the original post, and have some titles to add that haven’t already.
Alright folks, I need some help from you guys here. As the title suggests, I’m working on a future post, and one part of my research requires that I compile a complete list of independent black feature films that have been released theatrically in the USA since the beginning of this century. And that’s where you come in.
First, I should define some terms here; “black feature film” means fictional narrative films that tell stories primarily about people of African descent (no documentaries). The cultural/racial heritage of the filmmaker is irrelevant. And “independent” means that the...

This weekend, The Expendables explodes on over 4,200 screens at 3,270 locations, Eat Pray Love gorges on approximately 3,700 screens at 3,082 locations, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World scores around 3,000 screens at 2,818 locations. Packing Sylvester Stallone and other faces from the 1980s as well as more contemporary action stars Jason Statham and Jet Li, The Expendables has been gunning to be the Valentine's Day of action movies. Its marketing has claimed to have all the action stars in it, but, like Valentine's Day, the movie doesn't actually live up to that promise upon further scrutiny (Where's Chuck Norris? Carl Weathers? Jean-Claude Van Damme? Among others). The ads, though, have primarily pitched the three biggies: Mr. Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. Schwarzenegger has even been listed first in many ads, though he does not appear on the posters. Mr. Willis and Schwarzenegger reportedly have cameos, making the marketing disingenuous in its emphasis, but...
