Animal Planet is losing its programming chief at year's end. Michael Cascio, executive vp and general manager of the Discovery Networks-owned channel, is stepping down after 2 1/2 years to pursue unspecified opportunities outside the company. "I've had a great run here," Cascio said. "I'm looking forward to the time ahead." Discovery president Billy Campbell will oversee the channel while a search for a replacement is conducted. In his time at Animal, Cascio has spearheaded original programming efforts, including The Pet Psychic and Animal Precinct. Before taking the reins at the channel, he was vp cable programming at NBC. Before that, he spent nine years at A&E, where he was instrumental in the success of its marquee series Biography.
