It's definitely a bizarre sex comedy!
mario_c29 March 2007
It's a typical teenage sex comedy film, except in one detail: it mixes to the plot, since the beginning until the end, some weird (sometimes extreme bizarre!) short videotape films (kind of "candid-camera") showing, mainly, animals doing the most absurd and odd things related to sex (animal sex)! This movie turns extremely bizarre and unique because of that… Who had such idea?! That's completely crazy!

Apart of that unusual "detail", it's just a "normal" teenage sex comedy that begins to be very funny, hilarious at parts, but which doesn't end so good… The ending could have been clearly better, because the last ten minutes have almost no fun and don't bring anything new to this genre. It's just a too predictable and conventional ending.

So, the "innovation" of this movie was actuality the odd "detail" of the short "candid-camera" films mixed in the plot!

Can't call it a blockbuster!
FundeMentaL3 October 2005
Well what can I say, if you're going to watch this and you're really into a great epic you'll be disappointed. But if you hold in mind that this came from the makers from American Pie you know what's coming to you.

It's a shame Chris Klein hasn't have his chance to shine on his own because he really isn't a bad actor, he's just getting deals to sh*tty movies I guess.

About the movie, story isn't that deep. Jokes are many based on sex and farts but it's a good movie to kill a rainy Sunday evening with.

The outtakes were the best in my opinion so don't walk raging out of cinema just yet..

The Review From The Guy That Like This Genre of Movie
Mr_Sensitive4 November 2006
I didn't expect anything much from this movie but the trailer look pretty good and I love this kind of genre of movie, all that leads me to watch it. And despite I do get some laugh I did quite enjoy it as much as I could.

Brief: Ed the lonely man was dump a year earlier and never was able to get over it; and now his boss gives him an ultimatum - if he could not come up with brilliant ad campaign his ass is history. He was given the time of two day to do so unfortunately his brother have other agenda for him this weekend, to get Ed to finally get laid and move on.

Okay, I didn't find the film to be terrible or anything but I wish they should have polish the script a little more and add something new to the movie of this type. The story is same old as one would have known. The good thing about the movie is real life footages, which help the movie in great way with originality and humor.

The casting of the movie seem to be the best part of the movie with Brendan Fehr as little loser kind of brother and Chris Klein as a womanizer elder brother, both of them give a fairly good acting but it seem Chris might have gone over board with his enthusiasm. And the women in the movie aren't that bad looking.

Advise: If you do not like toilet humor, I wouldn't advise you to see it. And if you do, you probably know that these movies mostly involve sex and nothing else, therefore I will not talk about how were the directing, lighting, and cinematography etc. Just tried to relax and enjoy the movie lightly.

Reason To Watch: Series of Real Life Footage, Brendan Make Pretty Convincing Loser.

Reason Not To: Not As Funny As It Suppose To Be, The Story Ain't That Good.

Recommendation: Yes, But Only Worth Enough For If It On Cable Itself.

Rating: 5.5/10 (Grade: D+).

Rate Y/N After Read.

I liked America's Funniest Home Videos until I saw this.
movedout21 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The Long Weekend does itself no favours by blatantly ripping off the worst bits of the American Pie franchise and infusing it with some of the most nauseating and unfunny scenes filmed for this genre.

Gross-out sex comedies have been on the rise since the success of American Pie and its spawns like Not Another Teen Movie, Eurotrip and Van Wilder have thrived at the box office while being panned by many in the process. Although distasteful for many, these movies have always found advocates in younger viewers with many of its plots set in schools. Following the recent straight-to-video release of American Pie Presents Band Camp, audiences are now subjected to The Long Weekend, a crass sex romp through a city involving 2 brothers and the women they encounter.

In a story as old as time, the uptight and sexually repressed brother, Ed (Roswell's Brendan Fehr) is urged by his playboy brother, Cooper (American Pie alum, Chris Klein) to embark on a weekend of debauchery. Ed, a reserved and artistic advertising wunderkind, has hit rock bottom. His ideas hit a creative slump when he finds out that his philandering ex-girlfriend is now married to his former best friend cum roommate. Threatened with the thought of losing his job, he has a weekend to create a new advertising concept for his firm's biggest client, an insurance company that's on the verge of seeking another ad agency's service. Unfortunately, this weekend coincides with his birthday and his dolt-of-a-brother has something up his sleeves.

As the 8th most recognisable Western face in Japan due to a successful advertising campaign for the country's leading sake (a Japanese alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice) manufacturer, Cooper's the quintessential Lothario actor who beds the most promiscuous and attractive women that he's able to get his hands on. With the best of intentions, he's determined to get the reluctant Ed back into the dating scene as he drags him to different locales where desperate single women gather. With each scenario turning into 1 awkward situation after another, a resolute Ed is finally unwavering in his pursuit to have sex by the time his weekend ends.

The formulaic plot involving a tense and asexual character that suddenly becomes dogged in his pursuit of sex while facing obstacles that humiliate, maim and ultimately fortifies him is utilised till the end. A lack of originality is just one of the many reasons this film falters as there's none of the comic unpredictability we've come to expect from recent sex comedies such as The 40 year old Virgin. The film's gross-out factor hits pretty high up on the charts when we start to see bodily fluids being digested, faecal matter and scenes that border on bestiality. These scenes seemed to have been tacked on for the sole purpose of keeping viewers remotely interested in the lacklustre script and cringeworthy dialogue.

long weekend 2While it aspires to be a low-budget version of the Wedding Crashers or Swingers (both outrageously funny and highly recommended Vince Vaughn vehicles), it fails to engage viewers due to its unlovable and pathetic characters that have the misfortune of being badly played as well. Fehr seems grossly miscast as Ed as he comes off as a potential sociopath more than a sympathetic and lovelorn chump. Klein's Cooper is the less likable 'Stifler', being more obnoxious and ignorant to those around him even when he expiates his shortcomings in the end. As a film that appeals to a younger and less discerning audience through its gross humour, its story is unevenly set in situations familiar to adults and those accustomed to the workplace, decreasing its appeal.

The only fresh aspect of this film that made it bearable was its unique use of genuine home videos that feature folks getting hurt while in embarrassing situations and animals oblivious to the camera. These videos were used to accentuate a character's emotional state. Probably guilty Schadenfreude at its worst but it lent a distinct style to the film that managed to become part of the climax. No surprise then that 1 of the production companies involved in The Long Weekend is Vin Di Bona Productions, the company behind America's Funniest Home Videos.

Even a cameo by Lost's Evangeline Lilly was absolutely wasted as a dead body at a supermodel's funeral. Copious amounts of female nudity, distasteful visuals of animal parts and scatological humour are heaped in its short runtime of 85 minutes, a favour to the audience that the film's producers didn't count on. With inflated ticket prices these days, this trite and foul effort is a waste of money and time even when it eventually becomes available for rental.

Overexceeded my expectations of a crass movie by being so crass it was bright and funny
johno-213 February 2006
I saw this at the 2006 Palm Springs International Film Festival. I don't know how they let this sneak into the festival but it somehow got accepted and was one of the weekend late night screenings. I normally would have passed on a film like this but it was a late night showing and I like going to the late night screenings so what the heck. Barely had the opening credits ended and people were already walking out on it. I thought, wow, if people think this is so distasteful that they are were walking out already I need to see this through. This was actually a nice relief from a lot of the heavy and somber art films I had been seeing. This is a movie not a film. It's tasteless, crass, sophomoric and relies on bathroom humor and sex jokes. And it's pretty funny too. This is so intentionally over the top that it's quite fun. Cooper and Ed are both funny and charming. The characters they meet throughout the film, people who are on screen for just a minute or so, are more interesting and have more character development than many characters in sophisticated serious movies. I definitely wouldn't recommend this to just anyone but I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I'd give this a 7.0 out of a possible 10.

Piece of crap if ever I saw one
Superunknovvn6 November 2006
Let me just make clear from the start why this movie gets 3/10 stars from me. 1 out of 10 stars would be a movie by people without any knowledge of making movies at all and/or with inhuman content. 2/10 stars is a movie that was made professionally but without anything good or interesting about it. So, technically "The Long Weekend" should be in that category, but let's say Chris Klein's acceptable performance saved it from that rating.

Klein is just about bearable, which can't be said about the rest of this movie. Here's a short guide for aspiring makers of comedies: Tits, fart jokes, sperm or anything vulgar does not automatically equal funny. In fact, most of the time it's the opposite. The makers of "The Long Weekend" don't seem to understand that. They explore every dick joke no matter how predictable and disgusting it is. Actually, that's the best way to describe this movie: predictable, disgusting and let's add incredibly boring to that list of adjectives. The only thing remotely original about this piece of crap are the many blooper videos that are cut in from time to time. No, that's not enough to justify the making of this disaster. Not even close. Consider yourself degenerated if you think this movie is funny!

Funny, but could have been much better
rgcustomer20 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie started out great, but took some missteps and ended up only an average funny film. Still, it's not bad.

The use of various amateur videos of disgusting or hilarious or disgustingly hilarious or hilariously disgusting events was I think the major feature this film had going for it. It was, dare I say, a bold move, and I'm certain this film will be banned (or cut) in various locales for some of these few seconds.

I felt that the part about saving the company was a bit unnecessary. I would have left that out.

And, like so many Canadian films, it's in the closet about its location until the credits roll. Watching this film, I don't think anybody is buying the US setting, just because there are US flags on things. It's clearly Canada. The story doesn't depend on anything being in a particular city, so why not just be honest about it, instead of having this weird "we're not in Kansas anymore" feeling permeate the film?

I would have left out most of the moralizing, with the appeal to god, and subsequent acting role. It just doesn't make sense for that character, and detracts from the fact that this is supposed to be a comedy.

But on the whole, I enjoyed the film. It's laugh-out-loud funny at a lot of points, and some of those film clips just leave you shocked and speechless, but in a good way (if you're into being shocked and speechless). It's something you really have to watch at home, so you can rewind for those times when you ask "Did I just see that?" or worse "WHAT did I just see?"

Fart Joke The Movie
p-stepien15 March 2010
Don't be fooled by some of the posters. This movie does have a plot! Boy loves to make home movies. Boy becomes man. Man has woman. Woman eats best friend's cum and films it. Man finds woman and friend. Man throws away camera. Now man can't get laid. Because man can't get laid man loses creativity and will lose job. Brother vows to help man get laid. Brother gets laid, man ends up in prison... and almost gets laid. People fart. A lot.

The two leads are likable and as in any decent fart 'n sex movie there are loads of pretty chicks. Some do gross stuff. Others look at man doing gross stuff. Insert the odd joke. More often than not the jokes are lame, pathetic and just disgusting.

Must admit I did chuckle a few times and laughed out loud at least once. The best part in the movie are the unrated home bloopers, but not all of them are fun to watch. Some should just be deleted permanently from this world. All in all an OK watch, but the movie is plain bad by any movie standards. Still can be a guilty pleasure and will probably sell with testosterone booming youth.

the sexy brothers Grimm!!
boss_tonny23 June 2006
having nothing to do on a Friday night and all of a sudden remembered of the thought of mine to watch long weekend as it looked funny(the cover at the video store). the plot was fine and the flow was natural. from the beginning it looked like a new line story for the funny home tapes. bet the producer went thru all the funny and nasty videos they could find. at last a sexy comedy NOT from high school. the actors was fine and Cobie Smulders was great on her little part.

now the bad parts of the story, they didn't really show coops early life nor his career in that one year, and funny how much he got from the modeling to afford stuffs he use and spend. well thats not the major thing about a comedy and over all it was great. i wonder why it is still below 5?

!don't do it!
widzi12 October 2005
This movie, as was to be expected isn't really great. Even though it's just another comedy focussing on sex jokes it doesn't even make it in that category.

I don't think it should be compared to American Pie, it's jokes just aren't funny, at all. It's full of homevideo shots of people getting slapped in the face etc. that have to do with the story. It didn't help that once the movie started with a montage of some of these clips 50% of the audience behind me started laughing hysterically. I don't think I've ever heard people laughing so hard. I'm seriously wondering if they were paid to be there.

They didn't make the experience more enjoyable though, although it did make me smile sometimes when ten people behind me were kicking the ground every time someone toppled over. It was really ridiculous.

Anyway, I didn't expect much out of 'The Long Weekend' and I viewed it the way it wants to be viewed, a simple sex comedy. But I still think it's not worth watching it. Or at least paying to go see it at the movies. Of course I saw it at a sneak preview so I can honestly say I didn't know what I was in for.

If you're gonna watch it, make sure you're extremely bored and don't have anything else to do, I guess it can be entertaining under those circumstances.

Funny SEX Comedy
GregFOX20129 November 2005
While the main drawing card of this movie seems to be the assortment of raunchy sex gags and I'll admit they do make you laugh (I actually laughed so hard at one point I spit out a mouth full of pop). But what really helps this movie is the likability and earnestness of the two guys. You can't help but sympathize with Ed and everyone's has a friend who is something like the Cooper character.

The plot mainly deals with Cooper and Ed's "quest" for sex over one long weekend. That is all it is, and all it was ever billed to be. And it goes over great. I admit, I was not too excited about it at first but now I am glad I saw it. If you don't like raunchy stories who flaunt sex jokes shamelessly, and if you didn't like Porky's or Fast Times at Ridgemont High, or American Pie don't go see it. Otherwise, go see it and laugh your *ss off.

Any guy will appreciate The Long Weekend full tilt, and girls will realize just what hoops guys jump through in order to get their attention, let alone in their pants.

What added to The Long Weekend is that I liked both the characters. I didn't know Chris Klein could act until I saw this film, this is the first time he's stepped out of his usual character and I have to say he steals the show. I was glad that they didn't make them the stereotype one nice one sleazy Ed ain't perfect and Cooper isn't all bad. The brothers have some genuine moments on the screen which adds to the film as a whole.

Dude, go see this if you want to laugh...I saw this in Europe when is it coming out in the States?!!

Just another cheap comedy but Cobie Smulders
fraghera16 July 2011
I'm a fan of HIMYM and while looking Cobie Smulders's page I realized this movie so decided to watch it.

We all used to see this kind of funny movies, I mean a loser character at the beginning, than something ex-ordinary things happen and happy ending.

I know and u already know that this kind of stuff not happen in real life, I mean if even there is a cool neighbor girl exist in your apartment, she will never fart in front of u in the elevator so skip that. But funny movie and OK for having funny time with your friends or by yourself.

Wish that Cobie Smulders did more movies before HIMYM but thats OK, I love her and keep continue watching movies only because of she is in it.

Losing a job is stressful, especially when your only brother is a brain moron. Eddy bets his career over one weekend's work...
doctrNIC11 January 2006
An extremely poor film in EVERY sense of the term. It may have provided the occasional guffaw, but is far from funny. If however, you are a true fan of toilet humour, this film is for you! Poo and penises: this film would make an 8 year old laugh, and even he would have grasped all the depth of the jokes. The "flash of genius" of the hero at the end is far too predictable it's sad and you never really feel sympathetic towards the hero because frankly, there's not much of a character.

Overall, it must have been a darn long weekend for the scriptwriters who must have written most of the plot with their hands behind their back, considering the result.

The single scene worth remembering is Cooper's talk to God, whose voice is materialized by thunder and lightning. Other than that, nothing interesting.

Plain stupid
kosmasp26 April 2007
The main characters are somewhat likable and it's mostly so non-PC, that I'd love it, if I'd love this movie more. But it just never really is good. Gross & crass? Yes that it is, but then again, if that's all you're looking for, I'm sure you're better off watching Jackass or something similar like that. Hell even a few inserted videos can be found on the internet (you know where, the usual sources for videos, you'll find them or maybe you've even found/seen them before)!

So of course there's not much of a story here and it's mostly not funny, but a few moments are funny. And that few moments are good. A shame then, that there couldn't be more of them ...

An absolute turkey
jdogscoop30 July 2010
The plot summary is thus: One playboy brother attempts to get less swingin' brother laid. The end.

This movie is an absolute turkey, confirmed by the fact I could not stand watching it until the end. Chris Klein confirms his career is dying by agreeing to star in this stinker. Other stars are less than forgettable and the writer should have his hands chopped off for penning such rotting garbage.

A strong contender for the worst movie of all time. Beware of any review above 3 stars - the reviewer obviously had someone else write it for them on account of their parents being first cousins.

It's immature, juvenile, full of weird clips, but, funny at times
srdjan_veljkovic30 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There are way too many clips in this movie. Obviously, it's from time before Youtube.

A well known story, which, funny enough for a movie w/Cobie Smulders before HIMYM, echoes Barney Stinson telling Ted Mosby "I'm gonna teach you how to live", is not very-well carried out. The "Barney Stinson" of this movie (the older brother) is lacking any real plan or "plays". "Ted Mosby" of this story - the younger brother (who hooks up w/Robin Scherbatsky of this story, obviously) is not nearly so goofy or interestingly "out to lunch". He's mostly just whining.

But, these guys and gals are having fun and do manage to crank up a few good jokes and some well placed (if immature and borderline disgusting) clips. Since you can see them having fun, you're kind of OK with it.

So, it's an OK watch, but there are much better comedies.

Truly, truly awful sex "comedy"
sculpepper-17 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
There are some great sex comedies out there but this sure as hell isn't one of them. This is a mean-spirited, unpalatable, grotesque and deeply unfunny movie.

Normally I am happy to spend 90 minutes or so in the company of Chris Klein. I recently enjoyed seeing him in "Just Friends". What was he thinking when he saw the script to this stinker? The plot mainly deals with the two protagonists' efforts to find sex over the eponymous long weekend. Not a great premise for a movie, admittedly, but in the right hands it might have been fun.

Not in these hands though. The jokes, if that is what they are supposed to have been, are either idiotic, unhealthily misogynistic or utterly revolting. The action is interspersed with a variety of truly repulsive video clips (which have some vague relevance to the plot), mainly of animals eating their own crap and the like.

It's rare that I actually give up on a movie, but after 45 minutes or so I had to rip that sucker out of my DVD player as it was turning my stomach. There are doubtless some morons out there who'll enjoy wallowing in the unbelievable crassness that is The Long Weekend, but I would advise most of us to avoid avoid a-void this one.

Very Funny
sofiadelicia25 October 2005
This movie was very funny, went to see it with a gang of friends and it made us all laugh. Its the film to go to if you just want to be entertained. Its a lot like other gross-out films like American Pie, Meet the parents etc...but with a twist and it takes gross-out one step further. The guys I was with picked this out but I have to say the girls did just as much laughing as they did. Chris Klein did an awesome job as Cooper - we were all a little surprised that he was so good. The Ed character was also cute he basically plays the typical Jason Biggs character but was very sweet. Would recommend to anyone who just wants to go and have a laugh.

The trailer is even better than the whole movie
m-tiel15 June 2006
I have never been fond of watching obvious hilarious intended American teenage movies such as scary movie, American pie, etc etc.

the thing is, even the trailers of the above mentioned features were not convincing or pretending the real movie to be any better than those four trailer minutes....

when I saw the trailer for The Long Weekend, I got a whole different idea.......it seemed like a fast paced cool and worthwhile comedy movie to me.....

last night I rented the DVD, but sadly the whole thing was more than disappointing to me.

To cut it shortly: if you've seen the trailer---you have literally seen every 'funny' moment of this film...

the sad thing is, in the real movie the 'funny' moments take sooooo long to build up .....you see them coming for miles (hence, having seen the trailer) I don't have anything more to say about this film, except: If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the whole movie, only better, faster, and shorter....

Films like these make me wanna scream: FERRIS BUELLER.....WHERE ARE YOU...???!!!!!

The most dreadful, self-indulgent piece of crap ever made
Jackpollins9 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I like Chris Klein, and I like these types of comedies. This is why I had confidence that The Long Weekend was gonna be a very, very funny movie. I am sad to say I was wrong. I did not laugh at any one point throughout this whole movie. It's a gross-out comedy that's just gross. It's not funny, it's just gross. The story of Ed Waxman (Brendan Fehr), a guy who since babyhood has had a video camera stuck to his face like super glue is not anything new or original. This is not one of my biggest complaints. These movies do not have any intention to be new or original, nor should they. The movie follows how Ed finds his girlfriend videotaping her cheating on him. Ed now has lost his job, and no longer even looks at a video camera. Now, his well-intentioned brother Cooper (Chris Klein) tries to find him love, and just ends up screwing up his life even more (it figures.) The movie at least has an appropriate title, which is still not a good thing. It falls flat at every turn, and the movie is appropriately titled because this weekend is long, tedious, boring, and just plain dreadful.

A lot of inappropriate jokes, 1 or 2 was actually funny
SnoopyStyle8 September 2013
Cooper (Chris Klein) is a struggling actor spending his time chasing women. His younger brother Ed (Brendan Fehr) is a successful ad exec and video enthusiast until one day he finds his girlfriend in bed with another guy making a sex video.

This is definitely a broad inappropriate comedy in the vein of American Pie. Some jokes worked, but most just flopped badly. The intercuts with old videos just don't work. They aren't funny and way too amateurish. Chris Klein and Brendan Fehr are fine actors, but they're both strictly straight man. Chris is being asked to be the funny man of the duo, and he doesn't fit. Brendan Fehr is playing his role too uptight. That's not funny either.

It's a long movie for real
luluevil28 December 2023
The dialog is so long, I can actually feel the boredom already before the movie reaches its half. I also lost the interest of the guys' goal after the first couple of attempts. A small portion of the jokes are funny, but the rest is plain cheesy. You can predict the movie's end already in the beginning. I think the movie is trying too hard to be like American Pie or Road trip, except the cast is kinda small, so it wouldn't work out anyway. I also think that Chris Klein is the only actor here carrying the movie - despite his long dialogues with his brother. Brenden Fehr's acting feels unnatural in a lot of segments of the movie. The only genuinely funny part og the movie is the short home videos shown throughout the movie. If you find short segments of the movie throughout the Internet, watch them, and that would save you from watching the whole thing.

Quite surprised! Very funny after it gets going.
tswadkins1 February 2006
This movie should be judged for what it is and not what it isn't. This movie is just for fun nothing more. A little slow in the beginning but very funny once it gets up to speed. I'm not a big fan of crude movies like the American Pie series but this one I liked. That Chris Klein is my new best buddy. He is one naturally funny guy. I'll be on the lookout for any more work of his. I thought the photography was great. The acting was good. Directing was good. I don't have a clue what the budget was for this movie but from what I can see it was well financed. The uncensored "funniest video" clips are well placed throughout and are really funny even though I've seen most of them before. Grab a buddy and go see it!

The Long Weekend is Funny
thepotatoHasEyes11 February 2013
I will first off admit that this movie does not try to "take' YOU ANYWHERE OR deliver any social messages , it is just two brothers , one trying to help the other get over an ex . i didn't expect much , i watch a lot of movies , although the plot is thin the characters are engaging and interesting enough. to me, a comedy is not a good comedy unless you are laughing ten minutes in , this movie has funny opening scenes ,it is kinda typical in that it has its bathroom humor and gratuitous nudity but i was laughing right off the bat and regularly throughout.some of the jokes that could possibly be considered old are approached from a different angle and caught me with timing that i was not expecting --creating surprise and spontaneous laughter this ones going on my classics/repeat watch list ---
