New Delhi, Jan 25: Jaspal Bhatti, the genial sardar who not just brought on a smile but also provoked introspection with his biting wit and satire, has been posthumously named Padma Bhushan honour on the eve of 64th Republic Day.
An electrical engineer by profession, Bhatti, said to be the most popular Sikh comedian, carved a niche for himself with "Ulta-Pulta", which was regularly telecast on Doordarshan. It was followed by "Flop Show", a satire on social issues, which became a huge hit on the small screen.
In 1999, Bhatti produced and directed the popular Punjabi film "Mahaul Theek Hai", a satire on the Punjab Police, administration.

Bollywood stars have been paying their tributes to comedian Jaspal Bhatti, who passed away today (October 25). The comedian, aged 57, died following a road accident near Jalandhar this morning. Writing on Twitter, Anupam Kher said: "Just landed in Mumbai and came to know about my friend Jaspal Bhatti's tragic death. Why is god taking away all the nicest people? So sad. I used to tell Jaspal Bhatti that he does fantastic comedy so seriously. He was also a great supporter of anti-corruption campaign. Rip." Jaspal Bhatti was undoubtedly one of the most famous and talented comedy actors in the country. And this morning, this great comedian met with a road accident in Punjab's Nakodar town (40 km from Jalandhar), and made his way to the heavens.
News reports have it that his car crashed into a tree along the highway while he was on his way to Jalandhar for promoting his upcoming film Power Cut, which he had produced and directed and was due for release this Friday. The film was to launch Jasraj, his son. Post the accident; he was rushed to a hospital in Jalandhar where doctors declared him dead. Among the injured were his son and the film's heroine Surili Gautam.
Jaspal Bhatti, who made TV shows like Ulta-Pulta, Flop Show, and a film called Mahaul Theek Hai, will be cremated later this evening.
Bollywood Hungama prays that the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

Theatre actor and comedian Vivek Shauq died of a cardiac arrest early Monday morning in Mumbai. 47-year old Vivek Shauq was best known as comedian Jaspal Bhatti's other half for their performances in early 1990 TV shows like Ulta Pulta and Flop Show. He gradually moved on to theatre and did smaller supporting roles in over 50 films like Gadar, Aitraaz, Koi Mil Gaya, Dil Hai Tumhara, 36 Chinatown, among others.
Though no official statements have been made, according to reports, the actor slipped into coma after he developed complications post a surgery he had undergone recently.
His last rites were performed in the city on Tuesday and he is survived by his wife and 3 children.
