Sam Mattis plans to leave town, invoking feeling squeezed out as decorative management, but hides a crucial reason. Deborah Mattis lost her spot as heir to the firm throne and hides £30,000 cash Richard withdrew. .The factory staff is suspiciously uncooperative, fearing for their jobs and foreman Vince Kilcline having taken the blame for a tragic chemical burn incident years ago, the victim Stevie Earle having been spotted recently after seemingly settling for a most meager deal which also wrecked his family, and someone vandalizing Richard's board room portrait painting. This is the mystery that Dalziel and Pascoe must solve if they are to discover the murderer before Dalziel is moved sideways into a desk job to make way for "new blood". The strange thing about the case is that nobody seems particularly upset about the death of the businessman. As they probe deeper into the case all sorts of jealousies, money problems and family conflicts are exposed. Also, the factory staff is trying desperately to conceal various wrongdoings from the police.
