Nyay Anyay review :

The debut film for Sudhakar Bokade as a producer and Lawrence D'Souza as a director; Nyay Anyay dealt with rape revenge - a common theme for most '80s films - but what made it stand out from the rest was the manner in which the vengeance is taken and also for Sumeet Saigal's earnest performance which sadly went unnoticed as the film bombed at the box office.

Sumeet plays a somewhat diffident college dude whose life is shattered after his girlfriend (Shilpa Shirodkar) is gangraped and killed by the campus rowdy gang headed by Ankush Mohite. Unable to cope with the loss, Sumeet decides to avenge Shilpa's death and kills each of the perpetuator. A poison smeared library book, a bubbly bathtub and even an amusement park form the venue for the killings which ensue. With Inspector Khan (Mangal Dhillon) on his trail, Sumeet finds it tough to escape the clutches of the law. Even with brother Jeetendra as a judge and bhabhi Jaya Pradha as his defending lawyer..

Nyay Anyay was an engaging thriller particularly after Shilpa Shirodkar's death scene just before the interval. This is easily Sumeet Saigal's best performance though it didnt help his career in any way. Jeetendra and Jaya Prada lended good support. Newcomer Ankush Mohite left an impressive as the college goon but couldn't elevate himself beyond playing the villain's sidekick in his subsequent films.

This was a fair debut by Bokade and D'Souza and the duo struck gold one year later with their blockbuster Saajan (1991). While most of us have seen that film, Nyay Anyay is largely forgotten. Do give it a try!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
