re-visiting the barren lands of the Yukon
healy-818 August 2006
I wake up each morning anticipating where the Quest will take me for 1 hour prior to leaving for work. I'm really enjoying re-visiting the area especially the cross country hiking through the Chilcotin Pass. The Yukon River is quite a site since I've only seen it covered in ice and snow while living in Carmacks in the winter of 1999-2000. I admire the strength and patience of Adriane, considering that the group she's travelling with are of the attitude that women's work is not important and does not equal that of the others on this trip. That's the disappointing part of the journey and I'm hoping things improve before they reach their destination. If I were the cook and they were treating me like they treated her, I would be tempted to trade roles with one of them for a 24 hr period so both could get an idea of what constitutes Adrianes role in the group. Maybe the group could have agreed to each take turns at cooking and setting up camp. That's always worked good for me when I've travelled with a group of 2 or more. Just a side note - the Pioneer Quest in northern Manitoba is my favorite. They really had a difficult time homesteading. Looking forward to another adventure to inspire me to get to work to make money so I also can pursue my quest in life.

"Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better." MLK

This could have been a wondrous and imaginative trip for us, the audience, except for the way in which the whiny, spoiled men chose to perceive their hardships and place the blame, as well as displace their childish anger, on Andria Bellon. Even at the end, as they sit around the table in the tent, eating a wonderful meal, the 'boys' form together against her again even after she makes a generous offer. Christian Dave, a young man, never cuts her slack, while another young man, Sebastien, at least does leave her a margin of respect at that last table. Remarkably, Andria, after struggling with her emotional demons, decides to find the gold, instead of the dross, in this incredible situation. And, in the end, she not only talks the talk, but walks the walk.

Finally, I am left feeling sad. Why? Because, I have experienced and noticed that men have come to have very little respect and care for women these days. Myself, I don't ask for extra - no more than a man would give his friend. What I see, unfortunately, is a growing attitude of misogynistic passive/aggressivity that men don't seem to recognize in themselves at all. This is not good.

Hats off and great respect to Andria for her courage, patience, and heart. Hopefully she will have had a good influence on these guys.

Zero respect for the men's attitudes in 1897 OR 2020

Quite an interesting show! And well put together. I'm really glad that the producers did not sugar coat anything. (Especially the men's disrespect for Andrea) Hoping one or all of the participants read this.... y'all are asses with a capital A!!! I don't care what you can carry up a hill....you're attitude towards Andrea won zero respect from me. ZERO!! I would have Andrea as a partner for ANY task over any one of you "men"!!! I pity the women in your lives.

superb job! I found this mini series very entertaining and informative. It was like going back in time during the big gold rush period, the clothing worn and the equipment used was very accurate, the rationing of food the use of packers it gave the viewer a real feel for what the early pioneers went through on their quest for gold and the hardships that came along the way.Knowing that these weren't actors but real people that took this journey, made this film so much more enjoyable and realistic to the viewer. the only thing i would have liked to have seen is more attention paid to the panning and digging techniques that were done during this period overall i give this a very high rating. hope to see this available on DVD for sale.

Warning: Spoilers
*Spoiler/plot- Klondike: the Quest for Gold, 2003. The film documents and follows 4 men and 1 woman who retrace the historic route taken during the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush. Their amazing 3months journey takes them along the infamous Chilkoot Trail, and to the gold fields near Dawson City. Our modern-day prospectors complete this journey with only the clothes, tools and resources of the era and carrying 3000 lbs. of provisions, giving them a true sense of the challenges faced in 1897.

*Special Stars- Joe Bishop, Andria Bellon, Rick Unrau, Sebastien Racine, Dave Delnea.

*Theme- Teamwork and organization can solve any problem.

*Trivia/location/goofs- TV miniseries. Living history experiment. Filmed in the Alaskan 'panhandle' and the Yukon province, Canada.

*Emotion- I enjoyed this miniseries due to it's concept and well produced episodes. The cast an scenery was entertaining. I found this show very helpful in seeing how far some people will test themselves to obtain a goal. This film also showed the American Indian contribution to the Gold Rush and how helpful they were to that undertaking. This show held a positive message and also was unique for 'reality TV" show of present days highlighting the history courage of the original gold rush miners.
