Closer look at the funeral business than you've seen before
rooster_davis26 February 2007
This is a very unusual program. I guess it would be called a mini-documentary. It follows two or three funeral directors through their days, what they go through retrieving the bodies of the deceased, talking to and dealing with the surviving family members who can sometimes be difficult. The part of this program that is most unusual is that the viewer sees so much of what happens in the back rooms getting the bodies ready for viewing. You see them getting laid in the casket, people doing the hair and makeup and talking about how they are doing it, there is not a great deal of shielding the viewer or the deceased either. It's all done in good taste but I don't think I ever expected to see dead people being set into caskets or being made up. I suppose some might find this disturbing so be aware there is significant time spent on that. All in all it's actually a pretty interesting mini-documentary; just be aware it might not be something you'd care to have the kids watch.

Warning: Spoilers
As far as I am concerned, both funeral directors in this documentary were at home in their field, knowledgeable in the industry and ethical in their conduct. I was very impressed by the techniques used in preparing the deceased and reinforced this effect when personally stepping into the funeral home for my own training. As for the people shown being prepared, its really an honor, which in regard for the content, I feel that if you aren't into seeing dead bodies, i cant really understand why one would watch such a documentary. The movie could have done without Mr Antonopolous going for his audition and the embarrassing comment about his teeth made by the opening client, although perhaps its place had intention. Overall, this was a fantastic make, showing the real compassion involved with this business and is a must see for anyone considering the job or with a curiosity of the last taboo.
