An old and forgotten game develops magical powers in this fantasy for the whole family. Twelve-year-old Walter Budwing (Josh Hutcherson) and his younger brother, Danny (Jonah Bobo), figure they're going to be in for a boring time when their father (Tim Robbins), who was supposed to spend the day with them, is suddenly called away on business, and gives them strict orders not to leave the house. Walter, who doesn't have much use for Danny, is motivated by boredom more than anything else when he agrees to play a board game Danny has found in the basement during a round of hide-and-seek. However, the boys quickly discover the space-themed game Zathura has some unusual qualities -- a roll of the dice unexpectedly launches the Budwing home into outer space, and Walter and Danny are suddenly fending off menacing robots, angry aliens, and showers of interstellar debris outside the Earth's atmosphere. As the boys try to figure out a way back home, they get some unexpected help from an ...
(at around 53 minutes) Walter accuses Danny of cheating after noticing his piece is ahead of Walter's; Danny constantly insists he did not cheat. The sequence of the two boys' turns leading up to this point is as follows: Danny got a total of 28 turns (5, 4, 7, 6, 6) and Walter got a total of 37 turns (9+move ahead 2 spaces, 8, 6+move ahead 4 spaces, 8). Since Walter got the more amount of turns than Danny, this places Walter's piece ahead of Danny's, which proves Danny did, in fact, cheat. If you pay close attention (at around 43 minutes) where Danny is seen taking his turn before Walter's turn in which he accuses Danny of cheating, you'll notice Danny's piece lands on a spot different than the one shown right before Walter says to Danny, "I was ahead of you.", which further proves his accusation. In the UK, two sequences where an aerosol is used as a blowtorch and where fire is set to a sofa with the use of an accelerant (around 1 min 17 secs) were cut by the distributor. This is because the BBFC have a very strict policy on imitable techniques (headbutts etc.) and decided that the scene was unsuitable for anything lower than a 15 certificate. Since this would have excluded the entire target audience, Sony asked for the scene to be cut in order to obtain a PG certificate. See more »

great family movie!
Probably one of the best family movies I've ever seen. Lots of good clean fun, maybe a little bit scary for the youngest viewers, but not too scary for school age (I think). I intend to recommend it to my sister for her kids. I'm a big fan of Chris Van Allsburg's books. I enjoyed Polar Express a lot, but I loved Zathura. Definitely the best movie from his books to date. Almost as interesting as the movie itself was the making of the movie information from the DVD. I thought Josh was adorable, particularly how much he loved his stunts. I heartily recommend this movie. I watched it on a loan, now it's on my wish-list. Definitely a keeper for me!
