Small Indie Film That Does What It Sets Out To Do.
This is actually one of the better small-budget indie films out there. It's not exceedingly long, and it's hardly Schindler's List in it's execution. But it trys to tell a story, and a story it tells.
Familier viewers of Scottish TV will notice actors in many of Scotlands popular shows now (such as River City) and credit must be given to the young Colin Doyle who truly carries the emotional weight of the film as a disenchanted young boy living in a late-90s Glaswegian housing scheme trying to achieve the dreams his parents have placed on him, and is very reminiscent of a young Maculay Culkin or Haley Joel Osment. It's such a shame that with the exception of a few members of cast, most of them (including Doyle) burned out in the new millennium.
It might not boast the greatest acting (besides the lead), or writing(notable horrors include the "jump oot a close" dialogue), but if it's an intriqueing and quirky look at coping with the expectations that parents (mostly misguidedly) place on their children, then A Small Piece of Paradise is the short, sharp piece of media that'll deliver.
8 out of 10 purely because it achieves what it sets out to do. Tell a story you'll reflect on quietly as your evening winds to a close.
