A good movie
stylishboy00431 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Kaalia (1997) is often confused with Amitabh Bacchan movie which was released in 1983. The Mithun Chakraborty one is very good and has a different story and has actors who mostly worked in the 90's era in Mithun's other movies also.

It is mostly a masala film with Mithun being wrongly framed for murder and must take revenge for the wronf acts committed against him. It's a good movie in the sense that it engages and encapsulates the audience and from the get-go doesn't give the audience the chance to get bored.

The film viewers who love masala movies will love this movie and the action in the movie by Mithun Da is a treat to the fans of any genre.

Overall a decent movie and one of the better ones of the 'Mithun's Dream Factory' era.

Underachiever
lotekguy-17 June 2023
The elements were all in place for a much better film than this turned out to be. Kaalia was a man grievously wronged by crooked authorities and the rich bastards who buy and sell them like goods at a shop. When he's too principled to accept their bribes, and too strident in his refusal, they kidnap his beloved niece and frame him for murdering another official. He escapes to rescue the girl, avenge the wrongs, nail the bad guys and clear his name.

Standard sort of setup for these action flicks. On the plus side, Deepti Bhatnagar provides a light romantic note along the way, and shines in several energetic musical interludes. A handful of action sequences are excitingly staged, with less of the slo-mo of punched and hurled minions as many others deploy. The grittiness that provides is somewhat diminished by too many things crashing through brick walls.

The choice of starting with his breakout and filling in the backstory much later kept viewer empathy at bay too long. But the worst element is a comic subplot about conning a delusional thug into financing movie with him as the star. I kept waiting for the two plotlines to merge, making the film more cohesive. It's over. Still waiting.

Kaalia Directed By T.L.V Prasad is An Action Drama. Direction As Similar To Other Prasad Movie Which is Average. Screenplay & Script Are Fine. Editing is Poor. Action is Good.

Kaali Starts Working For Mahesh(Kiran Kumar). Priya(Dipti Bhatnagar) Loves Kaali & Confronts Him But He Has Some Other Commitments.

In The Past Kaalicharan Was A Honest I.A.S Officer. He Lives With His Niece. When Bhavani Singh(Rami Reddy), Pratap Singh(Mukesh Rishi) & Lallan Came To Endorse A Document So That They Can Take Possession Of a 500 Acres Land But He Refuses. They Meet CM Ask Him For Help. They Kidnap Jyoti And Get Work Done. Meanwhile CM is Murdered By Pratap Singh And Kaali is Framed As Prime Suspect. He Get Arrested & Her Niece Goes Missing ? Will He Find Jyoti ? How Will It End ?

Mithun & Sheeba Perform Better Than Others. Dipti is Poor Actor. Comedy By Razak Khan & Johnny Lever is Good. Music & Lyrics By Anand Raj Anand is Poor. No Good Songs.

Not good but not the worse I've seen

(1997) Kaalia (In Hindi with English subtitles) CRIME DRAMA ACTION

It opens with Kali (Mithun Chakraborty) managing to escape jail, and is in pursuit of some gov't ministers. And by the time he meets one of them by posing as a pastor, he then asks about the whereabouts of a person name Jyoti before he accidentally kills him. At this point viewers are oblivious in terms of his relationship between him and the person he is looking for. And at this point, Kali had already killed two ministers and this just adds one more. As a result of this police blunder of protecting one of the ministers, the commissioner then assigns ACP, Priyanka Sinha (Deepti Bhatnagar) to the case tracking or arresting Kali. Kali then puts on another disguise with a fake mustache and out of coincidence, manages to save wealthy magnate, Mahesh Malhotra and his servant/ assistant Nandal Chaulcy (who is comic relief) from five people who were attempting to rob them. Mahecsh then employs him to be his bodyguard/ servant, but this time not as Kali, but as Kaalia- hence the title. And it is not long before he and his bratty teenage daughter, Priya got off on the wrong foot. As soon as the father informs his daughter what happened, she then attempts to exploit the situation by getting her peers involve by getting two of them to jump him from behind. And when that didn't work, she then tries to embarrass him by getting him to fetch her tennis ball. When Kaalia rebels, he then slaps her before he lectures her. And it was at this point, she begins to show a little interest in him and follows him around, asking around for a person name Jyoti once arriving at a brothel of all places. And during on one of Priya and Kaalia private meetings, she then brings up the name Jyoti. It was at this point, we find out Jyoti is somewhat related to her, and is perhaps the only relative she has left. And that his job used to be important as his role was collector, when some of the villagers begin complaining. We find out he defied other ministers demands of having a 500 ace land being transferred to a group of five men. For two of the main men are Pratap Singh and his obese brother, Bhavani Singh. And it appears, Kaalia had been framed for shooting and killing one of the head ministers. Pratap manages to achieve this by using a pistol before placing Kaalia's fingerprints on it as his goons were holding him. The corrupt and dirty cop then arrests him, putting him and his daughter/ niece in a complex situation. They eventually get split up when as soon as Kali/ Kaalia escapes, he then goes on a obsessive rant to find Joti's disappearance ever since. She is eventually discovered sold to a brothel, he exacts revenge with more revelations. Such as the cop assigned to tracking Kali/ Kaalia used to be a couple.

I do not hate the movie, but at the same time, it is still not very good, particularly the unfunny comic relief. Many of these are reminiscent to Spaghetti Westerns as they are quick film making with unconvincing fights as they are over the top with singing and dancing. Pure escape entertainment.
