The Premier League era has not been kind to Crystal Palace. Four immediate relegations make for an infamous history and that past generates a sense of foreboding and inevitability about the outcome of the Eagles’ fifth attempt at top flight survival.
Desperate to confound the critics and break out of this familiar cycle, Ian Holloway recruited en masse over the summer. Palace were the busiest Premier League club signing 16 players in the transfer window. Holloway later admitted this was a mistake.
“We changed too much too quickly,” he lamentably told reporters at a press conference last month as he quit Selhurst Park by mutual consent after 11 months in charge. The whirlwind promotion via the playoffs came too soon for the Eagles.
That dressing room full of new faces was said to have eroded the spirit forged as Palace defied the odds by coming up from The Championship.

The Championship is viewed by many as the hardest league to get out of, and with last season’s enthralling finale at both ends of the table it appeared as if the English second tier really lived up to its billing. However, after all that it was Malky Mackay’s tough Cardiff City, Steve Bruce and his wing-back inspired Hull City and Ian Holloway’s Palace ; who all got the prize of Premier League football.
From the newly promoted clubs we always get the pleasure of watching some interesting players. Last year we were treated with Rickie Lambert’s rise, Morgan Schneiderlin the midfield maestro and Adam Le Fondre’s last-gasp goals all making the Premier League a better place.

Ever since Mick McCarthy was sacked, relegation has been inevitable for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The decision to dispense with the former Republic of Ireland manager was not in itself the axe that killed off Wolves survival hopes, but the calamity in appointing a successor meant the boys in gold never stood a chance.
Rather than receive a bump from a new manager with fresh ideas, the internal promotion of the affable Terry Connor brought with it a ‘meh’, and it is no surprise that results continued to go downhill. Yet Saturday’s 4-4 draw at Swansea showed there is still fight in this team as well as quality, although the 4-4 score line gives quick indication of their strengths and weaknesses.
First, let’s look at the finances. Relegation from the Premiership instantly means a shrinking of budgets, but Wolves are a well run club. TV money has been invested in...
