A rare gem of the type of Sci-Fi mostly ignored.
text238 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
When the term Sci Fi is used these days, we mostly think of spaceships, aliens and androids. That's a shame. Sci Fi has a long pedigree and isn't always about bloody space! ReGenesis was a show that delivered the type of sci fi that is, sadly, mostly ignored in this day and age. It explored how the science of today can run rampant, how seemingly positive experiments can go wrong, how politics and the military/industrial complex DO work hand in hand. (OK, we do see that in other shows, but not as realistically as here). From the get go, ReGenesis set a high mark for its dramatic portrayal of disease outbreaks and bio engineering run amok. Deftly, if sometimes over used, personal relationships between the main protagonists of the NORBAC team, weave nicely amongst the science of the show and the casting is without a doubt one of the best I've come across in a show of this or any other genre. Tackling many issues of disease outbreak/control, bio terrorism, political and military paranoia and genetic engineering it has gota be up there as the numero uno of 'What if..?' dramas. The characters within NORBAC are superbly realised throughout all four seasons and each brings a brilliant point of view/specialist area/personal drama to the over all feel of what could easily have been an over the head with facts based show.

Peter Outerbridge as main protagonist and head of NORBAC, David Sandstromm brought the kind of gravitas usually seen in high end, big budget drama and film. His character is complex yet all too human. He may be a genius scientist but he has problems relating to his family, likes to maybe drink a little too much and wants to bed any woman with a pulse! It was a shame that his character seemed make the lateral leap that solved everything and non of the other characters were given their '15 minutes' of scientific fame and allowed to take centre stage in this role within the organisation and thusly the story arcs. Outerbridge was, though, inspired casting. As the series and the show itself progressed, the not so simple marrying of Science drama and human drama was brilliantly staged during stories concerning his rebellious daughter, the loss of his mother and his fathers subsequent demise as well as the interpersonal relationships within the lab itself. On the science side, his characters fight to use good science to right bad science, investigate strange diseases and biological attacks and handle the different interests involved through politics and the military/industrial complex were very very believable. When he was frustrated, I was frustrated! The cast as a whole were awesome but extended merit must also go to Dmitry Chepovetsky's Aspergers syndrome suffering character, Bob Melnikov. This character was inspired, heart wrenching at times and above all, informatively written and acted concerning this strange affliction. Played with relaxed assuredness by Chepovetsky with just the right amount of ticks and mannerisms, all the while giving us grounding in his scientific speciality and the way Aspergus 'sufferers' can maintain and impart vast amounts of information. Empathy is teased from you rather than wrenched, as Bobs' condition dictates and Dmitrys' acting imparts.

Yes, the show did suffer from over use of its 'scientists at work' montages (yes yes, pipettes, petri dishes, centrifuges, DNA graphs WE KNOW!) and abruptness, it's major downfall. Some seemingly potential pandemics withered at the peak of the stories dramatic climax, leaving you with a slight 'Huh? But...'. And don't get me started on the ending of season two! There were so many important plot points left like gaping small pox wounds!!! They did tackle it in an interesting way through season three, points for that, but they just left too many bits totally unanswered and at times left me thinking we'd slipped through a hole into another 'same but different' universe. I do believe some of this may have been due to the way in Maxim Roy, who played NORBACs' manager, Caroline Morrison, left the show. In the finale where we see all the past characters involved in a montage, there is not one shot of her. This leads me to believe she departed on not so good terms and left them unable to film a proper resolve of the rather good thread that had permeated the first two seasons.

Saying all that though, the way they realised the end of the show was quite brilliant and totally unexpected.

I can't recommend this show enough. There aren't many like it ( I can only think of two, Asimovs' Probe and the English gem, Doomwatch). Superb acting, great writing, totally relevant science, real human dilemmas and interaction sublimely inter weaved with the high drama of the threats of viral outbreak, bio-terrorism, genetic engineering and the problems of politics/money via big pharma and a paranoid military (The killer crows and the air force was a great poke!). Watch it, enjoy it and relish a show unlike nearly everything you've ever seen!

Impressive amount of real science combined with a great story line
TesaRants11 July 2012
I am a fan of SciFi and have a hard time finding new material to watch and it was pretty hard to find this one.

I watched this series in 2012, few years after it was completed and I still found the bio-tech and other science content incredible and impressive for a fictional story. I don't believe that I have ever seen any fictional series or a movie with this amount of scientific content. Not that all the scenarios are plausible in reality but highly entertaining what-ifs in there. Kudos to whoever has wrote the scripts and I have been wondering if there a real scientist that wrote this.

There are multiple ongoing stories in each episode and one typically concludes while the larger theme continues.

The character development is excellent and the series is not shy to present main characters that mismanage ethical dilemma associated with their professions.

I have to say that I liked the editing of episodes too, there is rewinding trick that is used to show two simultaneous events that is quite interesting.

I miss this show.

Stunning Sci-Fi
Steven_Duffy12 January 2019
I have loved this TV show ever since it has been released and even in 2019 it is still remarkable.

Yes it is Sci-Fi sometimes so therefor some of the scientific stories are not always going to be 100% correct you have to understand this and only then will you enjoy it for what it is.

The acting is brilliant as I have always liked Peter Outerbridge who plays the tough and hard David the main PHD scientist at NORBAC. A very underrated TV show that really didn't get the appraisal that it deserved probably because it is Canadian and I never heard of it till I found the season 1 box in my local supermarket in England back in 2006 as I have always loved science so I thought i'd take a risk and buy it... a risk well deserved.

It really is a show that makes you think.. What if we as humans went too far? What if we dug up a body in the permafrost that containted Spanish flu and somehow entered the food chain of wild animals then passed onto us... What if! and as Sci-fi we can enter this world and speculate very much like Jurassic Park as we all know the story of the mosquito DNA from amber was used and mixed with DNA of frogs to create dinosaurs.

Take the show for what it is and enjoy this masterpeice.

Dark and different
night-dandelion22 February 2009
I'm generally very hard on TV shows. It's so rare that I really get the desire to follow one through...I'm a fan of movies, and I don't have time to lose on something that actually doesn't end soon :) But, ReGenesis got me! I'm not sure I can fully explain why... Yes, I am science freak. I practically understand everything they're talking about without explanations. However, when I look at it, CSI is for science freaks too, but I could never really fall into it. OK, it's different type of science, but CSI always seemed to me too exaggerated, too artificial.

There's something about ReGenesis... It's dark and mystical, and yet, it brings such fresh and amazing ideas! Combining science of today, and science of future, in such a subtle way. Everything is so well grounded. I must give respect to the science consultant. There are no errors or holes, everything is so logical and so possible. And so real-life dark.

Actors and characters are all great, but my true fascination goes to director. Really fresh approach on light, on time dimension, on camera movements. Excellent job!

All considering... this kept me glued to my chair, I warmly recommend it! :)

Dramatic and intriguing
Shreelar13 May 2011
This show had me on the edge of my seat so many times. The main character was a mess mentally and emotionally, but that seems to be the trend lately - a brilliant but messed up genius. It does make for some twisty stories though, some very heart-wrenching. Also lots of politics and business power-plays that makes us think more than most shows.

A few story lines towards the end really stretched the imagination IMO, but overall, most of the stories seemed plausible (I took one microbiology course and lower level organic chemistry, so an actual scientist might think differently). I recommend it for viewers that enjoy House and Bones.

A Fast Paced "on-the-edge-of-your-seat" Type of Drama
bigstickgreg6 October 2017
I got hooked on this while viewing options on amazon.com prime videos. As I had watched only a few episodes of "House", I didn't expect this series to keep my interest, and only selected it as something different to watch. The plots behind each of the episodes are addictive. I end up wanting to know more about medical science, pharmaceutical companies, and elected officials' input into finding cures for a variety of medical issues. I enjoy about everything in this series: acting, sets, filmography, topics, parallel scene roll-backs, and true-to-life comparisons of medical issues' reality. Kudos to everyone involved with this production. I'm only into the first four episodes of season 2, and I hope it continues on this path of excellence.

Science mysteries with personal dramas
roopo29 March 2007
If you know something about biotechnology and chemistry etc., try to figure out what is wrong with the plots. An old master's degree in biochemistry is not always enough to find those out, and maybe some are quite possible. In addition, the personal issues in the series are interesting also from the scientific point of view. Sadly, missed the first episodes of season two, as the series airs on a minor channel here, luckily a DVD-set should become available.

The most upsetting and nerve-wrecking currently airing TV-series for me, some episodes have even made me lose my sleep. Other episodes have kept me thinking for a couple of days after seeing them. I highly recommend this series to anyone thinking about scientific career or to someone already in a one.

The best Sci-Fi TV Series
keysersoze-1116 January 2008
Now 3 Seasons in, and a 4th coming very soon, Regenesis has to be the best Sci-Fi shows ever to be on TV. With its intense gripping story lines, with every new episode and season, you are hurled onto the edge of your seat by wonderful stories, biology and science, action and thrilling scenes which boggles which makes you think about how susceptible we are to bacteria. Witch all these gripping factors, they mix together to make a powerful show. In each Episode and Season the characters come alive while fighting to save humanity against ourselves... Have we gone too far? A question asked, decide for yourself the answer, the world of the Regenesis is pretty close to our own

Really enjoyable series which will be missed
fclive-475-58877313 September 2012
Really enjoyed this series which has only just reached Australia. One of the cable channels out here screened 5 episodes a week so it was just like watching the boxed set.

Seasons 1 and 2 in particular were very good. Some of the story lines in Seasons 3 and 4 stretched the imagination a bit too far but they had created such a great group of characters by that time that it didn't really matter.

In particular Peter Outerbridge as David Sandstrom was a great lead character.

It will be missed.

I love Canadian shows
zinniaacerosa15 August 2021
I always like seeing shows written from another country's point of view, but I particularly like Canadian ones. They seem to be able to indulge in conspiracy theories on film without actually running around shooting or blowing things up in real life. Such admirable constraint!

It's been a few decades since I worked in a research lab, and I only worked briefly in a lab that was doing molecular biology, where I only ran ELISAs, so I don't know how technically accurate the show was, but the story lines were plausible enough to enjoy. They got me thinking and looking things up again.

It was also good to see American politics, particularly right after 9/11, from another point of view.

I liked all the actors, although I wish they hadn't kept losing virologists. I particularly liked Conrad Pla, who I'd never seen before.

good
markstylesnyc29 September 2017
This has held my interest for the duration.. I just don't get the 30 second 'time loop' flashbacks. cannot for the life of me understand their purpose, become disruptive..

Science talk fascinating.. Knowing noting about the subject, it sounds plausible, and is like a DNA 'who-dun-it' from episode to episode..

Characters, casting good.. Pretty much every actor gets a chance to 'shine in the light'. which makes it more appealing.. They really skirt some issues, they bring up, then again, this is entertainment, not soul evolving preaching.

All in all pretty fine.

Underwhelming, not well done, and by the numbers
TonyCamonte8430 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I started watching 'ReGenesis' with moderate expectations. I had heard good things about the show, but then again that doesn't mean much. And unfortunately 'ReGenesis' didn't live up to my moderate expectations.

While it starts out looking like having an overarching plot, which it does to a point, from the 3rd episode on the serialized aspect becomes less important, and as the show becomes more episodic, sadly cases-of- the-week take over most of the screen-time. The show becomes formulaic, but at least the weekly story lines aren't all that bad.

So, the story itself is decent enough, but the storytelling is not. From the first minute in there's an awful overuse and abuse of music, horribly annoying effects, unnecessary flashbacks and mind-numbing montages. The dialogue is quite dumb, as the show tells you everything instead of being able to show it. Its usage of split-screen is completely uninspired and purposeless, the attempts at humour fall completely flat, and some wooden actors (especially Maxim Roy) don't exactly help much either.

It's not a bad show per se, it's just completely by the numbers and not always connecting them well, either. There's dozens of shows like it out there; ReGenesis doesn't manage to stand out among them.

Season 1 Amazing..
theemaster5 April 2006
I don't usually post comments on stuff I like, I cannot possibly name a list of favorite sci-fi or favorite sci-fi shows but I can name some contenders and this one is on that list so far..

Since I'm a bit of a amateur scientist.. I can understand a lot of the concepts this show talks about because I do enough scientific reading to understand. (basically speaking this deals with a lot of modern scientific issues)

And I have to say that the first two hour episode of series 1 is just amazing.. I would highly recommend to people interested in a science related fiction story.. with a plot! (and this is science.. it's a science drama really)

I can't say however watching season 2 at the moment that I'm as awe inspired as season 1.. but we'll see..

Worst collection of actors
osokona-719-34290618 February 2011
This must be the worst TV show I have ever started watching. The main actor is so bad that I am still wondering how he was selected for the role. People giving a 7 to this must not be watching too many shows.

I will give a 6 for the story, 4 for the dialogs, 1 for acting. By the way, I only watched the first 2 episodes.

Peter Outerbridge does not have a scientist look or behavior. I think he is the worst actor in the show.

Everything is exaggeration, repetition and boring endless scenes. The worst of witch is all the gibberish on the blackboard scenes. The whole thing moves too slowly to my liking.

Decent... but didn't make me hold my breath... like a balloon which never quite fully inflates
jairzinho9 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the first episode not expecting much. I was surprised that the story was rather enthralling. The actors are OK, if not great. Both Maxim Roy and the rest of the supporting cast are OK, but nothing more - adequate, without blowing my mind. Peter Outerbridge as the main character, geneticist Dr. David Sandstrom is actually better than that. His dogged dedication to his work at the expense of his own life and the people in it is very well portrayed.

----------- POSSIBLE MINOR SPOILERS ----------------

Where the series goes wrong is that they seem to have a lot of ideas, but didn't reject any of them and added them all as plot points which weakens the whole story. For example they got through the first viral scare so fast that by the time the tension mounted, it was already over. From there off to the next subplot and so on. Blowing from one major event to another works in a series such as 24 or Alias where there is always a high level of tension and unexpectedness but doesn't quite fit with this series.

Still I admire the effort of a Canadian cable channel in trying to do what HBO and to a lesser extent Showtime do which is TV programming with a twist from the average drab network fare.

One side I liked is that the whole series sounded and looked very natural with respect to booze. The 15 year old daughter gets a beer and her father doesn't go apes***. Can you imagine a teen on a WB show coming home and opening a beer in front of her dad without that being completely scandalous.

Final score 7/10 +.5 home team (canadian) bonus :)

eh! beavers , beer and HD.
bigjuan18 May 2005
As the summary notes I like this show because it excellent, Canadian, and shot in HD. Plus in Canada to find this original content on a digital channel is unheard of. Outerbridge was impressive as Detective Murdoch in "The Murdoch Mysteries" a holmeswellyan type broadcast on bravo. He performs equally here. The characters are well portrayed and are hard to put in to a box. They come across-ed as real not stiff or stereotypical. Some are definitely not hard on the eyes. Dmitry Chepovetsky is so believable as man social issues and a too huge IQ. The diverse ethnicity and backgrounds of the cast/characters adds interest and Canadian-ness to the show which I enjoy.

These genre of shows are starting to over saturate the networks. (science investigation, mystery, interesting locals) The closest comparison to be found on an American network would be "Medical Investigation". But as much as I enjoy Neal Mcdonugh the writing often stinks. I truly hope there is room time and money for mores seasons of this show.

Update: Season 2 is due in Spring of 2006. Yeah eh!

Well-acted but too many sub-plots
mark-15714 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This series showed up on a the Sci-Fi channel in the UK, but I watched it after a recommendation in a newspaper listing. I thought the characterisation and acting was in the main superb, on a par with any US or British series being made at the moment. Like another reviewer I thought that the main flaw was that they tried to cram too many plot lines into the series. When my wife and I saw episode I , we thought that it was a mini-series about a bioterrorist attack. However, just when they cranked up the tension on that story it ended abruptly and they started on another. This threw us completely and we almost stopped watching. I'm glad we didn't , because the real interest of the series is in the characterisation, as well as some of the story ideas. But there are just too many of them, and some simply peter out. This may be realistic but it makes the show disjointed and sometimes difficult to follow. Also, it may be a sign of age but could I suggest that the producers turn down the background music which often drowns out important dialogue.

One of my Favorite drama Canadian series
mbrand200220023 September 2005
ReGenesis is one of my favorite shows I been very fortunate to watch and you got some great talented actors that are involved with the production. Talented people like Maxim Roy who plays Caroline Morrison who is the director of NORBAC and very gorgeous woman to boot plays her part very well. Dimtry Chepovetsky playing the brainy Bob Melnikov who certainly knows his science to a T. These are the only two characters I enjoyed seeing on ReGenesis that really flows well with the show. It's now about to be seen on Global which they'll be showing all the first season shows. This is a must show everyone should look at. Can't wait for the second season on Movie Central.
