sometimes laughable, with over-the-top rubber-faced or stone-faced "acting" but a compelling watch nonetheless, we watched all 10 discs in a 4 or 5 evening marathon. A look at Korean culture - love, screaming, fighting, tears, drinking (the Irish of Asia?), family and social respect. Re: the story the younger/nephew Soo Hyuk's obsession with Tae-Young is hard to fathom as is his constant moping and introspection - it seems like half the show is him sitting on a floor staring at his navel while the same song plays in the background, not to mention his mother sitting in her shop with the sad woe is me look. The relationship between Tae-Young and Ki-Joo is also odd, what does she see in him apart from the doe-ray-mi?, just wanting to change him? although the Ki-Joo character does undergo some interesting development. Quirky twist ending wraps up the story. Nice job using "ice" hockey as a backgrounder. Some good one-liners and subtle commentaries.
some questions - why does GD Motors auto exec Ki-Joo drive a Mercedes and Bentley while in Paris but only a dull GM/Daewoo sedan (looks like a re-badged Chevy Caprice?) in Korea. Some product placement sponsorship.
what happens to the haraboji when the corporate boardroom subplot peaks, his character disappears? only a few hugs and one kiss the whole time, including the engagement "honeymoon"? Who's that chaste? There's limitations on movie making but really is there only 1 bar in Paris to go to (near the Moulin Rouge) , 1 movie theatre in Seoul, 1 bar in Seoul. It makes for a small world and too many co-incidental meetings.
