Operatic
Naval Lieutenant Leonce Perret loves opera singer Suzanne Grandais. His father the admiral, objects and has him posted to Indo-China, but not before they can wed.
Gaumont knew their bread and butter was making movies for the large, lower-class audience, but they were building movie palaces and wanted to court the middle and even upper class audiences. This movie was an example of that strategy. Silent movies were never silent, but always accompanied by musicians, and this one would have demanded operatic music to reflect its themes and emotions, quoting from Bizet and Gounod. Although the themes of both would undoubtedly be recognized by audiences of all classes in the era, if only from hurdy-gurdies, the senses of both composers would be an appeal to the middle and upper classes, who looked on familiarity with opera as a sign of education.
