Not what I expected but OK
jose_moscardo17 February 2015
Well... what can I say? When I watched this movie I thought that it was a Thai action movie like "Ong Bak", "Born to fight" or "Chocolate". Instead of that, what I found was a comedy action (sometimes a very crazy comedy) so my first reaction was to wonder "what the hell is this?". But that was my mistake, don't you think so? After changing my expectations while I was watching the film, I found myself laughing sometimes (hysterically at a couple of jokes). Not bad if I think that I'm not so easy to laugh. But what I primarily liked was the relation between the young heir and the girl from the suburbs and her family and neighbors. That was a nice touch, obviously not very developed in a movie like this but anyway nice and likable. Not bad at all, yes... Sometimes it's silly but it has its moments too. My two sons liked it, probably more than me. But I didn't dislike it either, so I give it 6 out of 10.

"Well he might have a weapon hidden in the bowl"
hwg1957-102-26570413 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It starts off with a great shootout at a reception and you think it's going to be a serious film but it soon develops into an action-comedy and I must admit that despite a few flaws I enjoyed it . The plot is no great shakes but the action was well staged and the comedy was funny with some nice in-jokes.(Tony Jaa!) Petchtai Wongkamlao is fine as the titular bodyguard and is supported by a cast who looked like they were having fun, delivering apt performances to make the film a pleasure to watch. Also in it is as Pok was the delightful Pumwaree Yodkamol and I've always been surprised at the paucity of her filmography. A fun film that gives one a good glow.

This isn't a waste of time but isn't worth going too far out of your way to see it either

The Bodyguard (2004) is a movie I recently watched on Tubi. The storyline follows a bodyguard who is fired when the man he is hired to protect is murdered by a rival gang. Despite being fired, he seeks revenge for the murder in hopes of redeeming himself from his mistakes and to ensure the son of the murdered man stays alive. This movie is codirected by Panna Rittikrai (Ong Bak 2 & 3) and Petchtai Wongkamlao (The Bodyguard 2) and also stars Wongkamlao (Ong Bak), Tony Jaa (Ong Bak) and Pumwaree Yodkamol (The Protector). The storyline does a great job of not taking itself too seriously and focuses on the comedic content, crazy one-liners and cartoon like characters. The action scenes are just okay, but the props and choreography are clever. The final fight scene is awesome and definitely worth a viewing. This is one of those movies that is filled with it or miss elements. This isn't a waste of time but isn't worth going too far out of your way to see it either. I would score this a 5/10.

I didn't get it, but I am farang...
joe-10901 September 2005
I live in Thailand and try to see Thai movies when I can. Some of them have been excellent--Ong-Bak, Suriyothai, Tropical Malady, Tom Yum Goong, Mor Jeb, Luang Phii Theng, to name a few. The Bodyguard doesn't fall into the excellent category. It falls into "what the hell is going on and why are all the Thai people laughing" category. This movie is supposed to be a comedy. The English subtitles were particularly bad, I speak more than a little Thai and many times I knew the English was not good because I understood the Thai. I didn't laugh once with the rest of the audience--all Thai, I was the only Caucasian (farang). Then there were the 3 or 4 times I did laugh out loud, and I was the only one laughing! This movie is of almost the "slapstick" variety, chock full of "inside" jokes (being on the inside in this case means being Thai or understanding the Thai language better than I do) and silly humor. It stars one of Thailand's most popular comedians, Piphat Apiraktanakorn, more commonly known by his nickname "Mahm" (usually spelled Mom, but he's a guy and not a real mom that I know of...) I think this guy is great and funny. This lends credence to my theory that the English subtitling was just awful. Mahm has a 3 minute cameo in "Luang Phii Theng" that is the funniest part of the movie. Try one of the other Thai films before going to this one. Especially Ong-Bak, probably the best martial arts film I have ever seen--And Tony Jaa is the best martial arts movie fighter I have ever seen (and he does it all without stunt double, wires, or computer effects). If you see one Thai film this year, make it Ong-Bak, not the Bodyguard!

was'nt what i expected
painindaneck20005 January 2006
i was say i was very disappointed in this movie, being that on the DVD cover was a picture of Tony Jaa.so i thought he would be in a great deal of the movie along with that other guy. but i was wrong tony jaa had ONE DAMN SCENE. and that guy who plays the body guard was not funny, and i don't know what kind of dope the guy was smoking to make him say he is asia's next Jackie Chan.as far as action or lack there of their was'nt the shooting scene suck(not of John Woo Caliber at all) and the wires used in the stunts where so obvious. this movie only saving grace is the it happy some halfway decent comedy dialogue. but if your looking for action this is not the movie to get.

That's how comedies should be!
SanShow20 October 2005
I only watched this because of the cast from Ong Bak was in it and to my great surprise it was one of the funniest movies I have seen. I was not expecting much because I thought it would just be plain silly and not so funny. But I was not so wrong, it was silly, but so funny that sometimes I found myself cleaning the floor when I was rolling on it. In such movies you have begin it on a high and they surely managed it with the shootout. And during the rest of the movie I never took the smile of my face. That's how comedies should be! Great job by Petchtai Wongkamlao and fantastic cameo appearance by Tony Jaa. But the best was the bald guy who ends the movie really on a high.

Boring, boring, boring!!!
sulizhen7 November 2005
I cannot say too much about this... errs... film (if it can be named that way)... It's simply boring: non-interesting plot, non-interesting action scenes, and non-interesting "supposed-to-be-funny" gags. The plot is a kind of never ending nonsense. I can accept things like this in some surreal and absurd humour pieces -like Monthy Piton's films, which are absolutely great- but not in a... let's say... "normal" movie. I mean, the only thing I expect from an action movie is to entertain me. If, as well as being amusing, it is a good film, so much the better. But the only thing I can say is that IT'S BORING!!! I expected to have, at least, spectacular action scenes, since Tony Jaa is among the cast... My hopes were in vain. To sum up, this is only recommendable if you have problems to get to sleep!

Absolutely hysterical
larley10 April 2005
I was lucky enough to see this movie at a film festival, and had been looking for it since. Petchtai Wongkamlao---Dirty Balls from Ong-Bak, though he was originally a stand-up comedian---is hysterical as Wongkom, and I was laughing throughout the entire film at his random antics. Most of the cast from Ong Bak was in this movie (Tony Jaa even makes a brief appearance in a supermarket), but the two have nothing else in common, despite the fact that Tony Jaa refers to Wong Kom (the bodyguard) as Humleih (Dirty Balls) only to be told "Wrong movie!" With a nod to every action movie out there, it's one of the best parodies ever, and I'd say it's one of the top Asian movies I have ever seen!

Wheres Tony? Don't Be Deceived
raen7423 July 2009
This movie says it stars him, at least thats how they market it, but really hes barely in it. Don't be fooled. Its not a bad movie though, but if your like me, and the only reason you saw this movie was for Tony Jaa action, you'll definitely be disappointed. Hes almost not in the movie. I don't know why they ever advertise the fact hes in this at all.

The movie however with that aside is actually quite funny. Like the people said before me, its got the cast from the other movies and is really a funny combination of humor. It barely had action and was almost a romantic comedy. Its really not a bad movie but its everything you wouldn't want. I can't believe I rented this movie,

AWFUL! I want my 93 minutes back!
healersmallbush13 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I picked up this film in a market, is that on the front cover it promised 'the return of Tony Jaa'. Having seen Ongbak and warrior king, I saw this is a good thing. Only what I ended up with was a film write, directed and starring Petchtai Wongkamlao, the co-star from the other films.

From the onset of the film, you get the impression that the film may be a decent action flick, with all the slow motion, dressed in black leather, gun fights aplenty. However this soon cools off, very soon, and you end up with the main star not talking for the first 22 minutes, gun fight scenes occurring with all the action being off-screen (yes I mean people getting shot without any real action) and jokes which really are not funny.

A major half of the film contains now action and is mainly about Wong Koms association with Pok, which to be honest I couldn't be bothered to watch and skipped to the end (I was getting that fed up with the film).

At the end where you expect a huge fight, what you end up with is the main guy getting beat up for 15 minutes, showing absolutely no fighting skill, and yet some how each person he's fighting ends up defeating themselves in some foolish way. This is stupid, is not funny and in the end I was rooting for the bad guys as the lead character was really annoying me.

The film was 95 minutes long, and yet I want 93 minutes back. Why? Because during the film, Tony Jaa appears for about 2 minutes and actually does some martial arts (very very well!). What a mis-sell! This film should have been done by having Tony Jaa in the lead role, and Petchtai Wongkamlao taking Tony Jaas, that way he probably would have been killed early on and there would have been a decent number of fight scenes at the end.

This is not a martial arts film, it is not a comedy, it is 2 minutes of good film hidden within 93 minutes of film that makes Chuck Norris look good.

I gave this a 2, which would have been 1 of Tony Jaa hadn't appeared.

Hit and miss Thai action comedy with film references for fans
Leofwine_draca11 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This Thai comedy features that county's biggest stand-up comedian, Petchtai Wongkamlao, as a bodyguard who gets embroiled in a war between his employer and a rival businessman. Now, Wongkamlao will be familiar to most Western audiences as the bald sidekick in ONG BAK and the policeman in WARRIOR KING, and here he attempts to reinvent himself as his country's answer to Jackie Chan. While a lot of the surreal humour evident from Jackie's films is evident, and there's a Chan-style chase scene where a butt-naked Wongkamlao is chased through the streets by a gang of gun-toting thugs (just like in THE ACCIDENTAL SPY), Wongkamlao is never going to be success in the West because the humour is just too far out here! Many of the jokes require knowledge of Thai culture and customs and as such they fall flat, and to make matters worse there is a monotonous sub-plot involving the lives of the poor which really drags the movie down.

The comedy is so broad and unusual that you'll be wondering what on earth you're watching. Humour comes from a bad guy henchman with Down's Syndrome and another henchman who keeps wearing the wrong clothes to work and misunderstanding his boss – that's a joke that is repeated about ten to twenty times throughout the entire film. While Wongkamlao does his best to keep up with the humour, he underplays his role and that sits oddly with some of the supposed comedy scenes. Bits involving the supporting cast are entirely dull and the romantic subplot with ONG BAK's Pumwaree Yodkamol only serves to reinforce my impression that she's an utterly annoying actress.

The film is bookended by a couple of decent scenes. The first is a shoot-out in a restaurant which is so over-the-top that it absolutely kicks ass; wirework is used in abundance as Wongkamlao flips, shoots and flies across tables, gunning down the bad guys as he does so. Meanwhile, the film's climax is set in a warehouse, as our eponymous hero battles various bad guys one at a time. There's a Thai boxer, the aforementioned Down's Syndrome guy (who turns out to be super-tough) and a period-set fighter. The comedy here is broad, and cheesy, recalling the type of humour in the SCARY MOVIE series, but at least it's more acceptable and understandable than that found elsewhere. The bit where a naked Wongkamlao has his butt squirted with a water pistol seems to go on for an age and makes for uncomfortable, incomprehensible viewing.

However, the film does throw in some references to other movies which are fun if you're in the know. There's a mad homeless man who keeps saying that Bang Rajan is about to fall, an amusing reference to the ultra-successful Thai historical epic BANG RAJAN which was released in 2000. One fighter at the film's climax adopts Jet Li's style from ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, complete with blatant wirework and OUATIC's theme tune playing over the action, which is very funny indeed. However the best part of the film for most Western audiences will be Tony Jaa's cameo; he plays a supermarket fighter who gets to kick some ass in a few (very quick) fight scenes. Passing Wongkamlao as he leaves, he calls the actor 'Humlae' – Wongkamlao's name in ONG BAK. Wongkamlao's response? "Wrong film, dickhead!". Unfortunately these genuinely funny moments come few and far between and the film as a whole drags, with the whole everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to the comedy quickly becoming tiring.

A very good-action comedy..
smiley-3229 October 2005
I saw this movie a while ago.. I must admit, it was very funny.. The idea of this bodyguard WongKom, who gets fired after the death of his client is just of those clichés.

But then later on, WongKom realises that a group of assassins are after the client's son, so that they can their hands on the fortune..

There were some funny scenes, good one liners.. Fights scenes and shoot out scenes, they were great.. Just like what you may've seen in another film ONG-BAK..

I think with this guy Petchai WongKomlao.. I think he'll be Asia's next Jackie Chan. So he used to be a comedian, unlike another Asian favourite, Takeshi Kitano.. But now as he takes the director's chair.. He really gave the film a good going over.. with all the thrills and spills of any action movie and combined with a bit of a slapstick humour just to add to all the fun..

I manage to see the behind-the-scenes featurette, which basically looks at the film on how it was made, as well as having the cast and crew interviews.. Well, not much crews.. But I must say, I've enjoyed it..

It was very good! A thumbs up! 9 out of 10!

The Lies!!!!
enigmanights30 April 2011
My boyfriend and I watched this movie only because it advertised Tony Jaa in it. To later find, that he was only in ONE SCENE is very disappointing. Even more disappointing is the poorly executed "comedy" and so called "action" scene. I think they could have done a much better job with this movie, considering the actors they had. We actually, don't mind watching some these corny movies every now and then as long as we are prepared for it. Although, we enjoy watching some these actors in some of the other movies they've done, don't expect the same type of caliber in this movie. So, if you are going to watch this movie with the expectation of watching Tony Jaa, or any type of martial arts, or decent comedy do not waste your time.
