Okay idea, really bad execution
trancejeremy13 March 2006
This is one of those movies that looks promising. But it really lets that promise down. It's neither good or bad good (in the campy sense), merely very very boring. And that's how a film really fails.

The apparent aim was to make a campy sort of movie - you have a cast of ridiculous characters seemingly out of various animated comedies like Sealab, King of the Hill and possibly South Park. You have one bald guy who likes to dress like a priest, another guy who wears army fatigues (and looks like the guy who mutters from King of the Hill), a goofy Science Teacher, another bald guy who wears a deck of cards on his arm.

The trouble is, none of the concepts really works. All of the actors play their roles too tightly, and it comes off as more pretentious than anything else. The only exception would be the campus cop leader.

The plot apparently revolves around a romantic dispute over a guy in drag. This was when I started putting the DVD player on "x4". Nothing much happens, but near the end we get sort of a surreal sort of fight with a guy painted blue and wearing a helmet and everyone else.

Could we get some water for these PLANTS, please…?

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie, and I use that term VERY loosely, in one of my film classes. As an example of what NOT TO DO. LAND OF THE COLLEGE PROPHETS is bad. Really, REALLY BAD. And not a "fun bad", either. Painful, angry, why-are-you-making-me- watch-this-type of bad.

Where do I begin? It claims to be directed by about eight different people and it shows. It also shows that not a one of them ever went to school, either. Very simple, first day, Film School 101 rules are completely ignored and it shows off that the people doing the thing are nothing short of amateur and the whole thing really comes across as a public-access show.

It claims to have a script, but can't see how. The story, another term that I use very loosely, is all over the place and extremely ponderous. It tries like the dickens to tell the story of the world coming to an end on some Lucas-Spielberg-Jackson-type scale. Except no one told the rest of the town- traffic runs as normal, college students wander freely during the numerous badly choreographed fights between the (cough) heroes and assorted grade-z hell-spawn. Attention to any kind of believable detail is simply non-existent.

And I certainly don't want to hear about this thing had no budget. EVIL DEAD had no budget. DEAD ALIVE had no budget. HALLOWEEN had no budget. Need I continue? Having no money is simply no excuse for making something as purely DREADFUL as LAND OF THE COLLEGE PROPHETS. If even the slightest bit of care was given to this thing when it was in idea phase instead of the "hey, mommy, look at me! I'm making a movie!" phase, then maybe, just MAYBE, something even remotely watchable could have come out the "Hale Manor Collective"'s efforts. Instead, a bad idea was made even worse by being made.

Whatever you do, AVOID THIS MOVIE. Do not believe a single positive review about it (as they obviously are coming from the less-than-no-talent hacks that were involved with this turkey), because anyone with DNA will be not only bored to tears by this thing, but downright insulted.

Don't believe the lies.

Warning: Spoilers
I actually worked on this movie. Well, briefly. I worked as a grip for the classroom scenes. But only for a few days because I simply could not stomach the out-of-control egos of the Hale Manor Collective. I also have to point out something very shady going on here. A few days ago, someone posted an honest review of this movie that the Collective did not agree with. A quick side note, the reviewer hit the nail on the head in saying that the reviews came from the people involved with the movie. They are. When the DVD's listing first appeared on Amazon, an e-mail was sent out for everyone to post reviews. When the negative review was posted, another e-mail was sent out telling us to "bury it". The good reviews that are on this page, and on the Amazon listing, are not honest. They are all phony and posted by the various members of the Hale Manor Collective, even if they are claiming that they have nothing at all to do with the movie. And frankly, that really stinks and is really unprofessional. So guys, face the facts. You made a lousy movie and somebody called you on it. Grow up.

And I must add something else, while out for beers with these guys the other night, they boasted how they were getting the quote "nimrods at IMDb to take down all of the bad reviews of their movie". So watch this page closely. Glowing reviews written by the guys who worked on the movie will stay, honest reviews (aka "bad" reviews, or reviews that the Hale Manor Collective don't agree with) written by outside sources will disappear. They report the negative reviews by saying that there were spoilers or offensive language (in which there are neither), then laugh about it. These people are not only lousy film makers, but shady and underhanded on top of it all.

Wow...
rklpictures16 December 2005
Wow. The DV revolution has spawned this. Digital Film Tree's Founder Ramy Katrib stated the other night while presenting that the DV revolution has done nothing but put powerful creative tools in the hands of mediocre to horrible story tellers. I present to you Exhibit #1: Land of the College Prophets. I applaud the effort of the young digital movie makers as the effort to produce a feature length project is not an easy thing to do. Especially when there is little to no money. That being said, the focus of said projects should be on dynamic story telling and rich character driven dialog. Keep the scope of the project within reasonable limits. This would include not attempting a large scale sci-fi/horror movie without the means to get it to viewable standards. One scene that springs to mind is the "climactic battle" on the front lawn of Tunxis Community College. Here we have "scary monsters" in broad daylight, with college students milling to and from class unfazed by the oncoming holocaust. This scene sums up the trouble with handing newbies cameras and computers. Jeff Goldblum's line from Jurassic Park springs to mind, "Just because you could, doesn't mean you should". I could go on and on pulling each scene apart as common mistakes are made over & over such as 180 rule breaks for no reason, mismatched misenscene, mismatched eyelines, and no match action edits. My advice to the young "filmmakers" is to get into some kind of storytelling school, tighten your aesthetic approaches, and put Adobe Aftereffects away.

Cult Indy Film
bruce-27311 January 2006
You will either absolutely hate this movie, or really love it. There is no in between with most Cult movies and this project is no exception. If it clicks with you, it's a genuine treat. If it doesn't then watching 20 minutes of it would be too much. Also, definitely not a girl movie.

I watched it with a group of friends, some of them enjoyed it and seemed to "get it" on whatever level. The others "got it" in a different way and had a ball ripping it apart. Those two guys spent another hour skipping back and re-watching some scenes.

Either way it's worth the 10 bucks.

Indy Drama At Its Best
iknowchris26 April 2005
I saw this film and was totally blown away by a few things - first, the story was original and nothing like what's out in the video stores or theaters. second - the way this movie was shot is amazing, colors are good and the way the camera moves around the characters and action really ties the movie together. finally i am impressed at what people can do with limited funds - i heard that they didn't spend very much money and the result fools you - usually low budget has horrible acting and less than desirable production value. This movie has great acting and good production value. I think they did their own music score for the film, which fits the bill for this production. If you like dark mysterious horror or futuristic films, this is a must. More people should be making movies of this caliber.

It's not Shakespere but it sure is funny.
marvinhaggler7713 January 2006
This is a pretty funny film. It is very strange almost like a Cronenberg Film but with a lot more humor. It's a cult film in the deepest sense of the meaning so honestly if you don't like cult films stay the heck away. On the other hand you like Camp Horror and action all rolled into one this is your film. The stories a little confusing here and there but it's really more about the characters, their interaction. It's a cool concept something like back yard super hero's or something like that. You can tell it had a low budget but it has great costumes and sets like the well. For such a small film it's leaps and bounds above other shoe string films. It's worth a rental, worth a rental indeed.

It's like Sin City's little brother
dela502120 April 2005
This film is amazing. Somehow these guys made a comic-book film epic on an independent level. It's like Sin City's little brother but set in a seemingly alternate present where people beat each other up and giant wishing wells come alive and eat people. The film speeds along at a ridiculous pace introducing eight or so character that look as if they came right from some messed up Lovecraftian fantasy camp. There's an Irish thug, a hundred year old Ex-Nazi, punk-ed out priest, a jar head, a bad ass Zen master and the list goes on and on. The characters are dark, cool, violent and funny. You want to hate them but you feel for them too. The fight scenes are great. Lot's of gore lots of jokes. This film has got to be the next Army of darkness

it's not sin city.
lakersfn2613 May 2005
Writing a review without spoilers isn't the easiest thing to do, but none-the-less, there couldn't be a better film with less of a budget. The original story and casting are two of the stronger points in this movie that stick out the most. The Land of College Prophets (2005)touched every genre but family, sorry kids. There hasn't been a better cameo appearance in the history of movies that topped THE Pranav Thakkar in this film (must see). Not even even Eliza Dushku and Ali Larter in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, or Alanis Morissette and Janeane Garofalo in Dogma. This film wasn't drawn out, or too time consuming. a must see for any film fanatic with an appreciation towards hard work & dedication.

Surreal Conflict Fable
notes-430 April 2006
Thomas Edward Seymour and Mike Aransky worked together previously on another low budget and noteworthy movie, "Everything Moves Alone". In that movie the theme and acting are angst-ridden and the visual story-telling is particularly strong. Thomas Seymour now shows his range by crafting "The Land Of College Prophets" which is the polar opposite of the former movie.

Where the acting is subtle and the scenery often open and expansive in "Everything Moves Alone", Seymour now uses saturated, exaggerated colors and claustrophobic spaces in "Land Of College Prophets". Instead of natural, everyday personalities, Seymour amps up the performances and themes in "Land Of College Prophets". The "guy next door" has been replaced by a heroic and angry archetype. Instead of quiet inner turmoil and angst, now the characters explode in graphic, yet stylized violence.

Too see both movies back-to-back would definitely get an audience on their feet!

Impressive!
jeremyfs10 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Look...I have seen the movie and I was pleasantly surprised! I heartily disagree with a previous negative comment regarding the film. The film makers have created an original and quite amusing piece of work. These adventures are what gritty, classic, cult favorites are made of. This is an amazing achievement for the film making trio. The Land of College Prophets is apparently their third feature length film, which is more than most twenty-something film makers can boast, and on a very tight budget I might add! It's unique flavor may not be to everyone's liking but you would be doing yourself a great disservice to not have a taste. :) A fun romp for moviegoers seeking action, adventure, mischief and mayhem...with a side of funny.

David and Goliath
tom-15593 January 2006
What can you say but that these guys obviously tried very hard. It's not a perfect film but it's a pretty good. The fight scenes are tight the image quality is beautiful and the sound design is spot on. It is a cult film so it is possible that you could hate it. To each his own but I have to say if you rented The Land of College Prophets looking for Forrest Gump than you're in for a disappointment. If you're looking for a cult film like Bad Taste then you'll have a ball! It's not like these guys are the next Sam Raimis but they could be the next John Carpenters. The film is well acted and Earnest and that goes a long way.

Praise to the Hale Manor Collective
jnh310 June 2006
"Land of the College Prophets" utilizes its low budget to good effect. The saga-engrossed characters meet challenges and villains all against the constant backdrop of today's mundane culture. The College Prophets are really about imagination striking out in the middle of Coca Cola land. Their parallel universe occasionally collides with the mundane and usually the mundane loses. Mike Aransky, Phillip Guerette and Thomas Edward Seymour are to be thanked for their robust homage to every great saga comic we've seen. Watch for Russ Russo too in a standout as Jonah Joe, a purist in the world of fighting. All in all, it's an exploration of point-of-view, exclusively from inside the saga. All the rules of the world don't work anymore, only the dark laws of the land of the College Prophets. John Huff

A timeless epic of biblical proportions...
tkuligcosc26 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Champions of the netherworld, soothsayers, and wildebeests; lend me your ears! Hark the coming of the first of a new bastion of cult classics by the veritable Thomas Edward Seymour. Army of Darknesseque, this brutal display of emotion and anti-life is a morbid tale, yet full of hope and wonderment for all. True tests of metal and stunning makeup effects make this almost mentally intangible and profound epic a masterpiece worthy of bare-boned, independent film praise and glory. Remarkable are the character developments that en snarl the hopeful yet dastardly and conniving leads of this maker of men. A rather remarkable relic is the centerpiece that spawns the rather unholy mass of destruction following an unfortunate altercation between our heroes.

Tried and true are these heroes, and at times the period of this film becomes blurred by the strangeness of the times in which these characters find themselves. Brilliantly executed, the world doth seem as though it is besides itself in a beautiful display of chaos and hatred.

Share it with friends whilst gnawing on the bones of that which you have thwarted!

All Hail Hale Manor!
davedonovan25 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film is what independent film-making is all about. It's directed by a group called The Hale Manor Collective, and they put together one heck of an imaginative movie. Thomas Edward Seymour is the jack-of-all-trades on this project as he not only helped direct it, but he also starred in it, composed the music for it and he even wrote the damn thing! There are people out there that are called College Prophets, people with amazing powers who don't even know they have them, until something happens that brings it out of them. That's the premise of this movie. When two buddies (Tommy and Rye) fight over the same girl, an ancient evil awakens from deep within an old well that legend calls The Well That Ate Children. The well starts to disperse it's tainted water through the town, turning everyone into bloodthirsty maniacs. Tommy and Rye must put aside their bitter feud and team up with some unlikely partners to banish the evil back to the well. A well written and directed film, College Prophets shows that original movies can still be made in this country, even if it's by a bunch of guys from Connecticut. The acting is surprisingly good also, you can tell that this was a labor of love for this group. A great B-Movie in every sense of the word--it has action, horror, laughs, karate-style fight sequences, compelling music, poetry and pink ninjas! It's a bare bones DVD with no extras, but who cares, this movie rocks!

Good Indie Action flick with strong potential!
hotdogstruttinfloozy23 June 2009
The Land of College Prophets shows much promise and will likely be the stepping stone to a great career for writer/director/star, Thomas Edward Seymour. The movie, while being primarily an action film with supernatural/comic book elements, has great dialogue and narration throughout the film. While obviously special effects and a larger budget could have made the film more appealing visually, I would call this an all around success for the filmmaker. This is what indie films are all about and it is rare that you get to see a truly independent action film. Land of College Prophets is a film that any comic fan should see. I look forward to seeing more work from the Hale Manor team in the coming years.

Great film
stuart_willis26 April 2006
Great film, which demonstrates what can be achieved on a budget.

There's credible acting, fantastic fight choreography.

There's also some unexpectedly serious gore and gorgeous cinematography - all of which combines to make you realise LAND OF COLLEGE PROPHETS is a masterpiece of low budget, independent cinema.

Great fun, and surprisingly moving at times too. A muscle fest for the main part though ... recommended!

Good luck to Tom, Phil and the guys on their next project.

Please support the collective, as there is huge promise in films like this.

A very funny romp
twoey-27 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a chickflick.

I do not like forced humor (read: comedies). But I very much like dark humor. This was a combination of dark humor and very witty writing. Who cannot like a movie with lines like: life is not "all sunshine and handjobs"? Although it never rises above the production value of a "B" grade movie, perhaps even a "C", as is typical of true indies, it carries itself proudly with what it does have. Its energy and REFRESHING originality are worth a lot of points in today's movie making environment. I subtracted only two points from a "10", one for budget constraints and one for occasional grammar lapses, and both these faults are understandable under the circumstances.

If you do not laugh during this movie, Bones will scan you and announce, "He's dead, Jim."
