Graduate Pablo Veiga returns to his hometown, Celavella, to take over his father's law practice. A ghost enlists his help to solve the murder for which he was wrongly executed, twenty five years ago.
Peasant girl Matilde starts working as Pablo's secretary. Pablo discovers that the woman whose murder he investigates was Susana, the birth mother of his adopted brother Tomás.
Prosperous "businessman" (smuggler) Pombo was a key witness in the trial of Susana's murderer, but Pablo discovers that he lied. He gets shocked when he discovers who paid Pombo to lie: Pablo's father.
The discovery of some human bones in the forest might be related to Susana's murder, but it proves fatal for Doctor Dionisio. Maybe Señor Memoria, the man with a prodigious memory, has a clue.
In an attempt to repress his feelings for Matilde, Pablo gets engaged to Inés, the local pharmacist. His mother is very happy, but Matilde and Civil Guard Wenceslao (who secretly loves Inés) are not.
The appearance of some jewels inside the image of a saint might lead to Susana's real killer. Because of Pablo's engagement, Matilde decides to emigrate to America.
Matilde postpones her journey to America until the murder is solved. Pablo finds out that Susana was about to marry a man called Eusebio Quintás. Is it possible that he is living in Celavella under a fake identity?
Town Hall clerk Crisanto starts courting Matilde. A blind beggar gives some information about Eusebio Quintás to the Civil Guards, which turns out to be false. He claims that a man with a bandaged hand paid him to do it.
The blind beggar identifies Laureano, the town mayor, as the man who paid him. However, is he telling the truth? Or is somebody trying to divert suspicion?
Matilde accepts Crisanto's marriage proposal. Local postman Claudio has motives to regret his custom of reading people's private letters. Laureano gets arrested, but is he the real Eusebio Quintás?
Laureano attempts suicide in jail. Feeling guilty, Wenceslao gets drunk and ends kissing Inés. A friend helps Laureano escape but - should he trust him?
The villagers chasing Laureano find the blind beggar's dead body in a ditch. Matilde discovers who the real Eusebio Quintás is. He kidnaps her and Laureano at gunpoint and forces them to escape through the forest.
With the real murderer in jail and the enigma solved, Laureano gets exonerated and the ghost is free to leave. Can Pablo convince Matilde not to go to America?
