A classic which spawned much controversy at the time of its release - I remember the uproar for the rather tasteless "War has never been so much fun" tagline - Cannon Fodder is an action-strategy war game.
Although its once charming visual style (a Sensible Soccer-like view from far above) now looks inevitably dated, this is a milestone. Gameplay was a firecracker of ideas: dozens of missions in a variety of settings, with rivers to cross, booby traps, quicksands, jeeps, snowmobiles... and those obnoxious enemy helicopters. It was fast, tough, and required careful planning and use of terrain between one burst of action and the next.
The Commandos series later followed Cannon Fodder's footsteps, starting with the remarkable Behind Enemy Lines.
