A tragic film, but for all the wrong reasons
MBunge29 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is bad movie to watch and one of the saddest films you'll ever think about.

Ethan (Matt Mercer) is a college student at Bergan State University. He's sort of a nebbishy guy who looks like a clone of Zach Braff that was taken out of the incubator too soon. He's also a member of the college's Omega Ki fraternity, though it seems as though Ethan is the one who should be getting beaten up from frat boys. Ethan gets a crush on a fellow student named Jennifer (Lauren Schneider). She's a pretty blonde…and that's about as far as her character goes. Ethan helps Jennifer study for her statistics class and then helps her fend off the advances of the lecherous Professor Swenson (Lindsay Ayliffe) before asking Jennifer to go to his frat's formal dance. Jennifer goes, but pulls the old "we're just friends" routine on Ethan at the dance. He then follows her home and Jennifer ends up dead.

Ethan begs his frat brothers Miles (Corey Cici) and Billy (Daniel J. Watts) to help him. Miles takes charge and tries to make it look like Jennifer died in an accidental fire. Of course, Miles uses two gallons of gasoline as an accelerant, which sort of defeats the whole "make it look like an accident" thing. Miles isn't really that bright, though he is a step or two up on Ethan and Billy. Anyway, the cops investigate and question all three guys. They don't get their stories completely straight, Ethan tries to throw suspicion onto Professor Swenson and then Miles and Ethan almost-but-not-quite turn on each other before the film just kind of…ends.

Storywise, this is like a Very Special Episode of "Saved By The Bell", where Screech kills a girl and Zach and Slater help him cover it up. That's about as deep and sophisticated as the movie gets. From a filmmaking standpoint, this is like a very well done student film. It might get you an "A" in class but it's not even close to the standards of a professional, commercial piece of work. Almost every scene goes on too long. There's a prologue that's a pathetic attempt at being clever and an epilogue that's a pathetic attempt at being touching. The background and atmospheric music in this movie is so terrible, you'll feel like tearing your eardrums out with an ice cream scoop. And when writer/director John Schwert skips over Ethan killing Jennifer and then spend the second half of the film showing us little flashes of what happened before revealing the whole thing at the end, I don't think even he really understood what the point of that was.

This movie isn't aggressively terrible, but only the people involved in making this movie could possibly enjoy it. It has nothing at all to offer the rest of us, except the weird resemblances of Ethan, Billy and Miles. I've already covered the Zach Braff thing, but Billy also looks like the slightly retarded brother of Dule Hill from The West Wing and Psyche. Miles, for his part, looks like the cousin of Alexander Chaplin, that guy who played James on Spin City.

I mentioned that this would be a sad movie to think about. Apparently, it's based on the actual death of a female college student. The end credits say the girl's brother spent 10 years investigating her death and the back cover of the DVD says the brother took all his theories and suspicions and made a story out of them from which Among Brothers was adapted. The end credits say no one was ever convicted of the girl's death. Which would make this tedious, uninspired and amateurish production that dead girl's legacy. That's very sad.

Disappointing
pmoul121927 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The film is about an unsolved crime, but in the film itself there is nothing unsolved about it; the crime is shown in all its gory detail. With what the police are presumed to have known, one would imagine that the investigation could have been completed. At the least, the police could have pursued it with far greater diligence than they did.

Why was the investigation placed on hold? Why, if it is a true story, does it make accusations which have to be libelous? Why, if it is only suggested by a true story is there no disclaimer? Why does the story jump from a police interrogation to an ordinary campus graduation scene some time later? A film doesn't have to answer all the questions it raises: movies such as Cache leave a lot unanswered, for instance. In this one, however, the gaps add nothing; they are just gaps.

Horrible acting

Such a shame. 2 main characters are decent actors but everyone else is not, unfortunately.

Very well done
chriscas-17 June 2005
I saw this film when it opened at The Palm Beach International Film Festival. It is VERY well directed, has an excellent story, it is very suspenseful and has absolutely some of the finest acting from unknown actors I've ever seen from an indie movie in the film circuit ever. It was based on a true story and the material was handled beautifully - not what one would think at all. John Schwert and his crew are on their way. I know they are currently seeking distribution and if any acquisitions team was smart, they'd nab this little gem up in two seconds. I recommend it for an good entertaining story that gets under your skin.

Unknowns deliver a punch on a tiny budget
newclear_designs14 June 2005
Morgan has provided a rich and moving story for Schwert and the cast in Among Brothers. The story unfolds and immerses the viewer with such ease that it's difficult to believe this is Morgan's first script. It probably won't be his last.

Mercer, Cicci, Schneider and Watts all do an excellent job of bringing the central characters to life. Their performances are professional, natural and candid, sometimes bringing to the film a gritty "docudrama" feel. Ayliffe is not bad but the handling of his first scene - particularly the closing part - is overdone and undermines an otherwise solid performance.

The cinematography in Among Brothers is superb, exhibiting a sophisticated and subtle progression from rich color to desaturated tones to mirror the progression of the plot. It is also often unnerving, which supports the plot and theme perfectly. The soundtrack is surprisingly good, providing an appropriate ambiance and emotional tone without being intrusive.

Despite a few minor flaws, this film is a remarkable product from relative unknowns and first-timers on a shockingly small budget. What the creators of this film lack in experience they more than make up for in talent. This is a film that refuses to be ignored.

The way an independent film should be.
jennybonk3 June 2005
This film is a must-see. Why? It's a true low-budget film, but doesn't look like low budget. The story line is compelling and based on a true story which will send chills up your spine. The dialog is well written and believable. The actors are undiscovered and talented and a few will no doubt be household names in the future. Unlike many films from first-time directors, the viewer is taken along on the roller coaster of emotions that the characters experience, and each scene makes sense as a part of the whole. This is a heavy film, and you'll feel exhausted after watching it. I definitely recommend you keep an eye on this film and see it if you have the chance.

Risky but paid off
tyler4all8 June 2005
I saw this movie at Worldfest in Houston and the room was packed. The director and a couple of his actors did a really good job of promoting their film. It was a very risky venture to tell the story from the viewpoint of the killer but it worked, in a big way thanks to the outstanding work from Matt Mercer ( in the lead role ) and Corey Cicci. Very good acting. A series of flashbacks well placed during the movie, lace it with a foreboding sense of dread. Disturbing at some points, yet necessary, they remind you of the gravity of these people's actions and how what they did affected this woman's family. Pay attention to the soundtrack too...it tells a story on its own. Definitely worth checking out.

Captivating story with unique point-of-view
Lucci3327 May 2005
"Among Brothers" is based on a true story of an unsolved murder on a college campus. What's very unique and interesting to me about it, to begin with, is that the story was written by the brother of the murder victim, and yet, the alleged murder is the protagonist of the film. Imagine that -- writing a film about the murder of your sister and making her killer the hero. This set-up creates a very honest and engaging spin on the murder/mystery film. Additionally, the performances of the main actors, all newcomers, were sincere and captivating. I saw this film at the Palm Beach Film Festival where the audience went crazy. One elderly woman in particular gushed about the film, the storytelling ability of its director and the great performances, and with good reason -- it's a great film. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

See it if you can!

This has really turned out to be a very good film! I saw it when it premiered in Charlotte. I was surprised how good of a film it is! It was filmed on a very low budget, but it still has a very professional feel to it.

Among Brothers has an intriguing plot that carries the film from beginning to end. It is engaging and has a very real feeling to it. The amazing thing about this film is that the writer portrayed the killer as the hero of the film. He showed him as basically a good person who made some very bad choices. Even more shocking was the fact that the writer of the film was in fact the brother of the girl who was killed.

There were only a couple things that distracted from the film. A couple times the lighting or a transition between scenes felt a bit off. But then it was filmed on an extremely low budget.

Overall Among Brothers is an extremely entertaining film. I would definitely recommend anyone to see it at least once.

whose side you are on?
itsjanelg13 June 2005
I was quite impressed with the film's ability to expose the complex issues running thru all the characters minds. The ability to view all sides of the story is a powerful experience. Usually you can pick whose side you are on and in most cases "the good guy" and stick to it.....not in this movie. You feel sorry for the killer, you get the full picture of how some times real accidents happen, the wrong decisions are made and how they effect so many lives. I liked the emotion expressed while getting to know the characters. They engulf you almost like you are a character in the movie as well. Each character at different points in the film will have you rooting for them. The actors do a great job winning you over. Also knowing that this film is based off of actual events is very humbling.

What make a "truthful" film
sixteenatheart11 June 2005
The best films are those done where the people involved have a personal commitment to telling the story, and where risks are taken. Tom Morgan took a risk in bringing this story to light through his writing. I believe he made the murderer the protagonist in order to try to figure out the "why" part of the story. John Schwert took a risk by literally putting everything he had on the line to bring it to film. By using unknown actors, he was able to bring out the believability factor. It had the same impact, in my mind as the film Boys Don't Cry. The first time I saw that, I walked out in the middle because I was so caught up in the story that I couldn't bear it. Among Brothers had the same overwhelming effect. I saw the Charlotte premiere. I'm so proud that John chose to make the film in Charlotte, using many local actors and crew. I was also an extra in the film. John even listed all of the extras in his ending credits. What a generous thing to do. Also, the incidental music and score done by Concentrix, beautifully complimented the film.

Among Brothers
Movie40916 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Among Brothers is a disturbing look into the secret society of fraternities and the bond that some members hide behind. Matt Mercer adds an air of nervous energy in his portrayal of Ethan, the brother who holds too many secrets. Watching him unravel and still try to hold himself together is terrifying. Mercer keeps Ethan on the edge, ready to capitulate and yet forcing himself to stay stoic. There is an excellent supporting cast behind Mercer and his slow erosion of Ethan's sanity. Most disturbing is how easily the events unfold and how quickly the brothers first fall in line behind their Greek Wall and then start to turn on one another.

Great story, good production, pretty good acting.
hccarr0128 July 2007
The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is I was sort of expecting a different ending based on the TV show (American Justice) that highlighted this crime. The movie was well written and not by a professional writer or screen writer.

Based on the interest in this movie I have no idea when or if anyone will read this. IF you do then do yourself and have a look at this movie. I confess this is the first independent film I've ever watched because I wasn't or wouldn't expect too much. I have to confess I was happily wrong. This was my first but won't be my last. Suffice to say that "Hollywood" doesn't have a "lock" on good quality films.

P.S.

You can see this film as the last post said at http://www.cinema.lycos.com (don't know where else for sure)

Cheers!

excellent adaptation
daniel-polowy13 June 2005
Great film. Knowing this was based on a true story made you really want to get inside these characters' heads. I enjoyed the flashback scenes as well, as they mixed up the speed of the film. Working with an unsolved mystery allows some artistic license and that was a big part of this film. It also allowed the viewer to create their own theories on what may or may not have happened. I left with some interesting questions in my mind. Mostly wondering what it was like to be a part of this tragedy when it actually occurred. What were the students thinking? What were the police missing? Really brings some unheard, untold tragedies to light. Looking forward to John's next project.

Fantastic first time feature film
rgrey312 June 2005
Wow! What a terrific effort for a first time feature director and writers. The story was clever and moved the film along to keep you engaged. I am not generally a fan of murder mysteries, but this story was extremely compelling told from the alleged murderers point of view. The unknown actors were perfectly cast. Although it may seem like getting the right actors is easy to do - it is not. John Schwert, the Director did an excellent job finding the right mix of actors to enhance his vision. The production values far exceeded this low budget film. The music was perfectly placed and written. The editing worked well. The Direction was almost flawless. I recommend this film highly. Anyone who likes Independent films must put this one on their "must see" list!
