It Really Hit's the Mark
arorashadow_200329 November 2005
I was really psyched for this game. Ever since I can remember I've been a Sonic Fan, and of course I bought my GC Soley for SA2 Battle (Other games have come along of course) So what can I say about this game.

On the Plus Side the story is fantastic. So many different endings you can chose from, so many paths to take, it's confusing which one to chose first. Good bad normal, whew! Not to mention the agonizing question "WHO THE HECK IS SHADOW?" After all he burst-ed on to the scene in SA2, as the ultimate Evil Carbon Copy Twin, with no absolute answerers. Including the end to SA2. (before him there was METAL) The darker story really makes it different from most Sonic games Another Plus, the variety of weapons. This raised some controversy amongst SONIC Fans. Even I was a little unsure. You know worried "Are they really making this as a Sonic Team Game, or are they just trying to jump on the HALO Band wagon. Fortunatley they didn't go overboard with the weapon use (although it is easier to use them) no blood gore, any of that nonsense. No first person shooting game style. So that was good. With Vocing, my deepest concern. First off with a character driven game like Shadow, VOICES DO MATTER. With a plain shooting game like 007 they don't. When I heard they fired the far more superior cast with the crappy Sonic X cast, who can't act. Fortunatley they actually acted. Jasson Griffiths who voiced both Sonic and Shadow actually did very fine with their voices. I was nearly fooled into thinking "maybe they didn't replace them after all." Despite Knuckles sounding like a 70 year old constipated man, and Yugi Moto the voicing was far better than expected. Music wise this has a new array of songs and music lead by the talented composer Jun Senoue, (?sp) and featuring the bands of Jullian K, Crush 40, and many more. The level music is catchy, and does bring up old Sonic Compostions of the past.

Now on the Miss Side, the controls can be a bit overwhelming for new players. Homing Attack can lead you right off the edge of a cliff if not careful. And the Triangle Jumps are a nightmare. And the Camera Controls aren't as decent as they should be. It's easy to lose sight of your character in a tricky areas, or to have a blind spot on enemy attacks. The Audio/Visual Sync can be over done or out of place. Some sounds drown out characters voices while giving instructions, and characters can interrupt instructions as well. Plus Music is often drowned out by the presence of sound effects. Fortunatley this is usually only in stages, and not in the Cinematics. With the Cinematics there are constant loading screens between cut scenes which really slow the story down. Although there is a variety of weapons to chose from, many of them especially the RPG's have very poor accuracy, which can make long range shooting difficult, in difficult areas.

Overall I really like this game, it was fun and enjoyable, I still have YET to beat the VERY Final Boss. This game was not a disappointment for me, I liked it, and it earns a solid 8 from me.

Shadow may be alright for kids but teens and older would probably be disappointed
Aleta_Nook18 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of Shadow and so I find this game kind of interesting but it's also rife with big problems that makes it not one of my favorite games. I remember watching Shadow the Hedgehog on Youtube, I saw a commercial for it in like 2005 and a year later, I checked out the last story where Shadow confronts Black Doom and becomes Super Shadow. That's when I was smitten with him, his earnest personality, his voice, and emotional pain had him one of my favorite Sonic characters ever. So, at least this game caused me to first fall in love with Shadow, before, I had no opinion of him.

Story:

There are different routes to go in this game so you can make Shadow evil, a hero, against his evil creator Eggman, an emo hedgehog who's guilty for his actions, etc.. It's a bit of a mess. It was canon that Shadow was a good person who was mad at the world and wanted revenge for some perceived injustice. He has a dark past which caused him to be this way but it doesn't make him a bad person. So, He's an aloof character, I don't imagine he's the type of person that would care about anybody except for Maria. I don't mind him wanting to discover who he is since most kids his age would want to find out who they are anyway. They tried to make the villains creative, but I don't like the alien idea.

Character:

Why make Shadow curse, use guns, shoot people, and become evil and on the aliens' side if the player wants him? And also, it is implied he contemplated suicide in one of the paths and thinks insecure, hateful thoughts about himself.

Even Sonic curses and depending on who's side you are on, if you are doing something opposite (and for few characters, destroying Eggman's robots), they will tell you to stop and it gets annoying. I mean, all this time, Sonic and the others wanted to defeat Eggman and now they don't care neither.

This is a kids franchise, I don't understand why Sonic would go that route.

Controls:

The controls are very slippery. Moving Shadow around the whole game is a chore.

Overall:

A pretty forgettable, though funny Sonic game. The backstories were unnecessary, Maria is a flat character and it makes me think a game about Shadow and his past may not be the best thing to do. A better game probably would've been Sonic Adventure 3 or something. Kids may see it differently, but teenagers 15 and older would probably find it too annoying to be particularly memorable. Shadow fans and video game fans like myself might find the game relatively enjoyable, though.

Shadow The Hedgehog (Personal Comment)
DragonsBond97625-117 November 2005
The overall gameplay I'm going to give is 8 out of 10. There are some minor problems of using the homing attack and then accidentally fall to you death and this is the first I witnessed when a Sonic game uses the word "Damn" more often in a kids' game, hence the rating: (E 10+ : Everyone Age 10 and Up) especially when Shadow loses a life. I heard that majority of the voice actors for this game are mostly the same actors from Sonic X or 4 Kids Entertainment. I kind of missed the original actors who played the previous voices of Sonic The Hedgehog and Shadow The Hedgehog from the previous games: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Battle and no offense, the one of played as Rouge The Bat, (Kathleen Delaney, last I checked), it kind of makes Rouge's voice sounds older like somewhat in the late 20s-40s and personally, I would prefer the one who played Rouge's voice before (Lani Minella) from the other previous Sonic games instead.

It's good, But It does get old... FAST!
setolovesmoney32115 February 2008
If you've played sonic Games for a while, Chances are you know of a little game called, Shadow The Hedgehog. There are many problems with this game, Such as: Bad Voice acting, Clunky Movment, Partialy Broken Controls, Bad frame Rate, Stupid AI, ETC. Now, The game is and does have a good side, but the game Does get REALLY Repetitive (Especially on PS2 and Xbox) after about one time threw the Story of the game. Overall, If you like sonic and Want to play a Sonic game that is dark, has guns, has Swearing and has a lot of Shadow the Hedgehog, Then go rent the game!

Not perfect, but overall fun.
chahutmaenad18 April 2018
Shadow The Hedgehog takes you on an edgy, fast paced, complicated adventure through Shadows story. If you are willing to overlook some less than perfect controls you are sure to have a wonderful time with this game, despite it's flaws it still continues to be one of my favorite sonic games.

Behind the scenes of Shadow.....
Irishchatter3 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Ironically I think this game had a lot of work put into it in regards with being 3-D . Jareel White did a good job voicing him as a rough guy including Sonic. I'd say learning lines from two characters ain't easy!

I'm glad we finally found out Shadow was created by Eggman's grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik. I actually forgot Shadow did forget who he was but somehow I knew he would be involved with Eggman since I was playing the game 'Sonic Heroes' years ago!

What I didn't like about this video game was Shadow kept saying the same things over and over again for example: "Finally I got all the 7 emeralds", "I am Shadow the Hedgehog and this is who I am!" or his evil laugh. I was just fed up listening to the same stuff he comes out with whenever he achieves a mission, c'mon like he should've said more then that! I also thought Rouges voice was really odd as she sounded like she had too many cigarettes! Can't they have gotten somebody better??

If you're a hardcore sonic fan like myself, check this out!

Great game, but very different from other Sonic games
alucard61730 January 2008
All right, the title for this comment doesn't mean that's a bad thing. This is not like other Sonic games because it's a Shadow game. The game is made to personify Shadow's character; a confused hedgehog capable of great and terrible things. The game is much darker than others and has a much more involved storyline that finally ties up all the loose ends left in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes.

Story: The story is a bit out there, even for a Sonic game, but it's still a great one. The story opens up with Shadow trying to remember his past, the only thing he can remember is the gruesome murder of a girl named Maria. As he contemplates this, the sky is filled with blood-shot clouds as aliens known as the Black Arms literally storm down and start killing and destroying everyone and everything. Laser cannons begin to shoot out from the sky, causing mass destruction. The leader, Black-Doom, then approaches Shadow and tells him to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds and give them to him as part of a promise made long ago. From there, it's up to you to decide what to do; serve the aliens, help Sonic and Gun, help eggman, or simply collect the emeralds for yourself. Now, this is the basic concept, there is A LOT more going on in this game. The game has 10 different endings and you need to play through them all to understand what Shadow is all about. Once this is done, the final level is opened and this reveals everything from the alien's intentions, to Black-Doom's relation to Shadow, and even mysteries in Sonic Adventure 2 such as why would Gerald create the Eclipse Cannon before he went insane. The story ties everything up nicely and, surprisingly, there are no plot holes. The only complaint I have is that it is extremely difficult to know what event takes place when as there are so many paths to take (Over 300, no joke).

Gameplay: Now the gameplay can either suck or be great depending on which level you're on and which mission you're undertaking. There's really no in between rating for gameplay, it's either great or horrible. The main problem is that even when you have decided which side to serve, characters from opposite sides will randomly show up and tell you to help them even though you decided not to. That and the fact that everyone shoots at you, even the side your helping, making it very hard to make sure that you're serving the side you want to. Lastly, some missions are way too long; some take almost 30 minutes, especially for those who are new to the game. It's bad because the missions before hand are really short, so you're not expecting the next ones to be so long. Other than that, and I know that's a lot, the gameplay is usually very fun, fast, and action oriented. It can just be VERY frustrating at time, which is why I gave this game an 8.

Graphics; FMV are beautiful and are good enough to be mistaken as a fully animated Shadow movie. The action stages have good graphics, but nothing mind blowing. That's pretty much it.

Music&Voices: The music is great, especially the theme songs. Each one reflect Shadow perfectly. Some are sad while others are Gothic and some are cheerful. The action stages have very suitable music too and really makes the game that more enjoyable. In terms of voices, there should only be two to care about; Shadow and Black-Doom. I'm happy to say that, at least in my opinion, that both are fantastically done. Griffith does Shadow which concerned me. He's alright as Sonic in this game, acting is good but voice just doesn't fit, but his acting and voice for Shadow are simply top notch. You can tell he put A LOT of effort in this game. Black-Doom may be even better as this guy gets my vote for best villain since Ganondorf simply on voice. Almost every word from this guy is about the murder and torture of the humans. Great villain and the voice acting has to be heard to be fully appreciated. Other great acting goes to Mike Polluck as Eggman and Gerald Robotnick and the voice acting for the Gun Commander, Maria, and the President are also very well done. So, great game and it is something new and different.

Currently one of the best video games in Sonic history.
Grantfan221 December 2005
Shadow the Hedgehog takes place after Sonic Heroes and before Sonic Battle, only its one of the best video games in Sonic's entire history! Choosing to battle the demon-like alien Black Doom and his hellish army of aliens theor G.U.N and their military robots and soldiers even against Eggman and his robots and Shadow Androids, another added feature is the good or evil chooses in each stage which leads to another and yet deadlier envioment. Often characters may ask you to help with even the DUMBEST missions (collect rings from Eggman's amusement park for example) But it makes up with you getting deeper into Shadow's seemly unknown past.

the best sonic game right next to SA2B!
shadowdavid22 December 2008
this is one of the best sonic games i ever played!the voice acting was good and the amount of violence actually worked out well for a sonic game.shadow is my favorite sonic character and this game just made him even better. The level lethal highway really took advantage of everything.Using a combination of weapons and vehicles made this one of the best levels in the game. When shadow debuted in Sonic adventure 2 for the dreamcast (later ported to the gamecube as sonic adventure 2 battle)he was an evil character, yet every game has made him good at the end.Shadow has more of a friendly rivalry with sonic but in this game shadow is willing to kill to find out his past.A great final boss and an interesting and surprising storyline make this one of the best sonic games ever made.

Heartstopping journey through Shadow's backstory
UnbiassedJohmson3 November 2023
As UnbiassedJohmson, full name Toulis Johmson. There are many things in my life I am unbiased towards. This game is another thing that I am unbiased towards and believe this game deserves a 10/10. The story is simply excellent, I think, because I didn't play it and just watched all of it on YouTube. However I can tell the gameplay is top notch as video games go, I think, I've never played any other games so that I can stay Unbiased in my job as UnbiassedJohmson. The part where Shadow jumped and hit the enemies made me cry, and I don't even think it was related. All of this really helped hide the fact that I haven't felt happy since 2021. I hope this review as UnbiasedJohmson helped to hide you from the truth about the world and the fact that this game was actually a documentary about what would've happened if we didn't figure out that Clinton did 9/11.

I could not believe people actually liked this game.
guardian_earthhow12 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
It was enough that game was too slow, and too long. But now, Sega has tarnished Sonic with Jason Griffith, a voice actor of who we all know from the most utter piece of crap I have ever seen, Sonic X.

But I do not even have to stress that.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a feeble attempt to get gamers to buy Shadow and think it's cool. The fact of the matter is that it's not cool. It is stupid, repetitive, and just torture to the ears.

This game is about Robotic Shadow (from Sonic Heroes), fifty years after the events on Ark (Shadows's past in SA2), in which he must find the Chaos Emeralds and restore his memory.

In this game, you basically run around and use the homing attack, or the gun if you choose, and "mowing" down enemies. Unfortunately, it's more complicated. Depending on what you do, you can only attack certain enemies, and because this, the game slows down, and gets aggravating quick.

Also, there are over 300 different things in this game to earn, but I doubt that people will have the patience. Even though there is replay value, it really does not make a difference.

The story is by far the corniest crap I have ever seen. We take a deeper look into "Shadow's past", and watch it unveil into something greater. However, I was not particularly interested. I wanted Sonic, not this all but dead character.

The graphics have not improved. Although the CG cut scenes are well rendered, they are far from entertaining. They will explain the storyline, but I did not find them enjoyable. In-game graphics are much like what you would see in Sonic Heroes, despite the fact that Sega claims that there is a new graphics engine.

As for the sound, the music will rock you if you are a fan of Crush 40 or sonic in general, but not so much for anyone else. As for the voice acting, don't stress me on that. It was awful, period. I suppose this is why Nintendo chose not to make Link talk.

Now, do not get me wrong, I am a Sonic fan, and I wish I could say better about this game.

But, I am disappointed to say, that I'm giving it 3/10.

shadow is about to find out his past
moezabian22 February 2006
now don't get me wrong i am a huge sonic fan i loved sonic adventure 2 batlle(SA2B)and ever since that game i wondered a few things like how shadow and sonic are exactly alike but i did however like all the weapons and the cool alian monsters but when i saw the movies and the extremely cool cinamatics i thought that they would be part of the game instead i find that vehicles like that nice mortorcycle would be in more than 1 level also i thought that there would be better use of the vehicle instead of extras also there were very nice levels except some were ridiculous like falling ark which was awful and shadows unarmed combat is pathetic but either way i like using homing attacks more. i liked the guns especially the egg vacuum which sucks up everything except for big creatures, the one thing i hated was the pointless you decide missions because you learn of whose good and evil but non of it is clear till the end. Also some of the levels are a bit too cartoon like i did like them and all but shadow is the punk type cartoon levels aren't right also there is no explanation on how shadow looks like sonic there not twins since shadow was created before sonic there not clones because shadow was locked up for 50 years. Even though all this is present you can still have a lot of fun playing this game the better you are the more you will enjoy it
